2014 5.3 Sierra "low compression repaired", now Low Oil Level

Recommended Posts

With the repairs for the low compression issue, the dealer changed the oil/filter, then after picking up the truck and driving 30 miles, the Low Oil Level message comes up……..pull over, check and oil level is fine. Started the truck, and no message, however about 30 miles later, message comes on again, and this is repeated during the entire trip. So I stopped by the dealer thinking maybe a sensor wasn't connected from the previous repair. However he stated it would require more diagnostics, and would need the truck for at least one day.

All of this is not my normal experience with GM products!!

Any thoughts or ideas before I take it in tomorrow would be appreciated.

Seems like they didn't get the oil filled all the way. The dipstick may have shown enough, but that could have been from the oil sloshing around while driving

Yep. Did you check it cold?

It was still hot from driving………I let it set about 3 minutes before checking it.

If he checked it while hot, relatively short after turning it off and it read full. Wouldn't that mean it could over filled? if more drains for waiting 3-5 mins it's going to add not subtract

And from working in the industry for 15 years, full temp 0W20 oil drains very quick. Quick enough waiting 30-60 seconds is enough for reading.

Oil level sensor goes into upper oil pan. lay down and take a look if the connector is plugged in.

Heavyclay, good catch…………one quick look and sure enough the connector was not plugged in. But now it is!!

Thanks a million!!!

Awesome! Glad is saved you a trip back to the dealer.

With your truck being so new, those weather seal connector take a little extra push sometimes to seat. Technician may have thought the lock clicked. Then only to vibrate loose

Would you share what the repair was for low compression? I would imagine a new engine or at minimum new short block
