Use HotSpot with Straight Talk or Similar?

I know that I can pay OnStar $50/month for 5GB of data for connected devices while I'm in the truck. I believe that this is done via a VZW-based cellular / LTE service. Is there a way that I can activate the device with a carrier like Straight Talk or similar and get service through them? It would be great if I could activat the "phone" in the truck with them and buy a Unlimited talk/text with unlimited data for $45/month and just tie it to the truck.

I'm going to guess that somehow the device is "provider locked" or similar restriction that prevents this sort of activation, but wanted to see if anyone actually has some details around this.

OnStar uses AT&T LTE for its data services. If you had AT&T for your cell provider, you could share the data with your vehicle and phone. It's provider locked.

I have AT&T, but am considering dumping them for Straight Talk because of the significant cost savings. In order for me to switch, though, I have to get a new SIM for the phone. The phone does NOT have to be carrier unlocked as Straight Talk offers carrier-specific SIMs - this is actually how my daughter transferred her phone off of my account and took over the responsibility of it.

Since Straight Talk offers services on the AT&T network directly, would this make it a possibility to have them to provide service for the truck? Or is AT&T literally the only company that could do it directly outside of going to OnStar?

Could I add the truck to my AT&T account as a device for the $10/month fee instead of paying the $50/month to OnStar?
