Fiat & Chrysler Recall/Buyback/Fines

They mention older Jeep's...which ones? My wife and two kids ride in an "older Jeep" so I'm most certainly concerned about a fuel tank issue!

First generation Liberty (the one that looks like a butch VW Bug) and the 99-04 Grand Cherokee I think.

93-98 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Liberty.

I know the Liberty is recalled for the fuel tank rupturing on rear impact. They will install a Chrysler trailer hitch to add protection for the fuel tank. If you have an aftermarket hitch, they will evaluate it to determine if it provides the necessary level of protection or not. Recall was originally announced last Summer - old news. This is EXACTLY the same issue that was raised by 60 Minutes / Consumer Reports about the original gen Dodge Durango when sold without the trailer hitch - I believe Dodge actually stated that the hitch was integral to the rear structural integrity of the vehicle in their docs, though.

Not sure if the recall for the Grand Cherokee is exactly the same or not.

What happens to these vehicles they buyback? do they get crushed? sold at a deep discount? resold to dealers?

TIA

Pretty sure they can't be re-sold. I would imagine that they would strip whatever they can recycle before tossing whatever is left.
