tailgate assist

I have a 2014 silverado that i brought into the shop because the tailgate assist was working right. The plastic cap on top of tailgate has some scratches on it. The tailgate has no dents from the scratches are any dents period and is perfectly line up. The chevy dealer told me that the small scratches on the plastic cap are causing the tailgate to bind up so the assist wont work right. Has anyone else had this problem?

LOL. Scratches on the cap won't affect squat. Either bad damper (behind right tail light) or the plastic bushing in the right hinge is bad.
