I would hook up a scanner and drive your daily routine and record live data. Then go over it and look for any misfire data on each cylinder, air flow data, fuel trim long and short term. I would do it twice once with it going from 4 to 8 cylinder and then with it disabled.

Can you provide any more details? What info can I give to the dealer?

My 17 does this! 2-3 it bogs then catches, feel like the truck is tethered then the tether breaks. I’m going to mention this when it’s time for my first oil change.

Haven't chimed into this thread in a while, but I actually had a blow out on my tranny last week. Picked the dog up from the vet and just trying to merge into traffic, rpm start flaring, hard engagement into gear, slipping, lunging, etc. Barely made it home to drop the pup off and limp to the dealership. Haven't got a full diagnosis yet. Hope to hear more by tomorrow.

Bring it in and told it was the torque management system doing what its supposed to. I accepted this and kept driving it.

 

After this last weekend I had the opportunity to drive it 200+ miles at speeds of 70-75 mph and what I noticed that the same hesitation/misfire would occur if I give it a certain amount of gas at that speed. At this speed the RPMs were right in that 1700 RPM range that I was noticing the "Misfire" after a shift. Well after coming back down to speed it would consistently happen happen while accelerating from a dead stop at a "normal" pace. This was after running the ruck for 2 hours on the highway. No CEL. So I take it back to the dealer to get some service done and have them to explore this again...The answer I get was they could not replicate the issue and the only thing they think it may have been is the transition between 8/4 cylinders and since I don't have exhaust flap I may be noticing it more, I have an aftermarket exhaust. This was after 2 days and the shop foremen driving it home for the night and back the next morning. Which my response was the truck was in here prior to the exhaust and know what the transition feels like, and what is occurring is disruptive and can be felt by everyone in the vehicle. Of course at this point there isn't anything they can do since they can't replicate it and there is no code. They want me to drive with a tech to see if its my driving style. I had 2 others drive it and it happened to them too...

 

So not sure what to do or what it can be...everything points back to ignition/fuel in my mind since it had issues from the factory.

 

 

What you guys think?

I love how their first diagnosis is always aftermarket parts. I have similar symptoms and asked them to check it out at my first oil change last week. They said they couldn't replicate it but that they noticed I installed an Airaid intake tube and said it was probably getting too much air... C'mon now!

I am having same issue with 2018 not a problem with my 2014. Took it to dealer first oil change and had them look at it they pretty much did the same song and dance blaming tranny program. It's a 6 speed 5.3 4 wheel drive almost the same setup as my 2014. I agree Bash74 you probably will need to hook it up to scan and drive it. It won't flash a code because its to short of time.

Do you happen to have the TSB# for this?  My truck (2018) is doing something similar to this.  When it is acting up, I can hear a sputtering, whomping type sound from the drivers side.  I have been searching this forum for an answer and have found different solutions from different people all with seemingly similar problems.

 

These are the possible solutions I've seen thus far:

  1. Loose exhaust clamp that is near the catalytic converter
  2. Bad vacuum pump
  3. Bad steering column/firewall seal
  4. Torque converter locking up (this thread)
  5. Exhaust flapper valve (I have mine permanently open which stopped the ticking sound I was hearing at idle...it sounded like a loose heat shield)

I also suspect that it may be AFM related based upon other things I've read.

 

I drove into work today in "L5" to keep the AFM from turning on.  The issue I'm experiencing was seemingly absent.  I'll pay attention on the drive home today and see if its still gone.  If so, I may just disable my AFM.  I'm not a fan of taking my truck to a dealer and letting a technician drive it all over tarnation hoping to find some intermittent problem.  My past experience with dealerships is if you want results, you have to arrive armed with all of the information that you can gather to avoid being given the runaround.

 

I must admit, I pretty annoyed with a new truck doing this with less than 2000 miles on it.

Ok, I have a 17 3500 chassy cab savana with a reading box,l96 and 6l90. I have the same exact issue since new 40k miles ago. Even with the other member saying in hotter air temps it worse. Even the weird up shifts. My 15 1500 5.3 seirra does this but it's almost un noticable...almost.. 

I have a Diablo t1000 tunner I use as a gauge pod in the savana. When this issue is happening the ignition timming is low in the. Single digits and fuel trims sometimes go to near 10% negative and positive. Usualy not the 20%full swing.. No knock retard on the gauge. I was thinking its fuel /ignition related...when its runs good. I see great timming and only a 4 to 6 % swing in fuel trims. And no hesitation. The dealer said it was the torque converter slipping in and out 'as designed'. Well he was wrong. He did a live test scan when I was driving and it was in a solid lock up with zero slip while it was happening. Then he had no other comment on the hesitation feeling. Black bear tunning is my next step. They will do a data log and make a tune for  the savanna since there is none out there.  

Anyone have any other updates?

Anyone find a solution to this issue? I have a 2016 5.3 Z71 with 72k. Starting having a similar issue this week while accelerating around 20-25 or 50 mph I can feel sputtering or jerking sensation. I initially thought I got bad gas but injector cleaner and 2 tanks of high test later same issue.

Ok. Did a custom tune to the trans and engine. All I have done to the motor is a k&n filter element. The engine is so much more responsive and runs great. The trans tune was set from locking up in 2nd at 1800rpm wth the factory tune under a light load to late in 4th gear. Also it holds each gear longer before the shifts. What i did notice is once it is in lock up i now know what i was feeling as per the hesitation. If i log the rpm in lockup  up a slight hill or any but hold that speed i notice the prm's jump from one number up and down 40 to 60 rpm. Its not a calculation error due to i can hold the rpm in a non lock up situation almost to 0 fluctuation. I emailed black bear and they are going to look into the tune and see if it it calling for 100% lock up or not. I will give updates as they come in.  Hope this helps someone else.

This is exactly what my 2014 is doing. Just kinda started out of nowhere. I find if my truck is warmed up it doesn’t do it. But, everything all of you are talking about is what I am experiencing. This is an old thread so I am wondering if anyone ever found the actual solution. There is no codes at all.

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
