Headliner removal

Hey all, I've been looking around but can't find anyone who has pulled out the headliner on these trucks unless it's one that went to SEMA and of course, the shops who did the work don't remember it or talk about it, and if someone has purchased the truck they don't know since they didn't do the work.

My question is, has anyone tried to pull the headliner on one of these trucks? Not interested in just pulling it down just to run wires. I plan to pull the whole headliner down and out of the truck so I can fabric paint it or have it redone in black. My end goal is to have all fabric black and the hard plastic parts colormatched. The headliner is my last major part of the truck to be changed besides the bumpers before its how I want it to be (for now lol).

If Anyone has pulled the headliner down and can give me advice on removal or any kind of a heads up on what kind of a PITA im getting myself into, let me know pls! This won't be an easy project for sure, but I'm really hoping someone can tell me if I'll have to remove the seats to get the headliner out and how to remove all the pieces.

Thanks in advance!

no vinyl, I will either get specialized fabric paint for the fabric parts of the headliner or I will have it redone in a black material.

I'm hoping I can do the specialized fabric paint cause that should be cheaper lol. My uncle did it years ago in his 350Z and he said it worked great, so I'm looking to do the same. I may actually be pulling all the hard plastic parts this weekend and paint them, depends on how time goes this weekend

for how easy the seats are to get out I can tell you it will come out alot easier with the seats out. Ive dropped plenty to change the antenna but never fully removed one. Im interested in how yours turns out would love to redo mine black along with all the upper plastics. do you know what paint your using on the plastic yet?

yes I plan to use the same paint I used for my interior trim pieces. Its ShoplinePlus. How are the front seats removed? If anything I may have to remove the passenger seat. I plan to leave the driver side unless removal 100% necessary so I can still drive the truck. I can live with only the driver seat for a few days if I need to. The rear seats I already know how to remove but never had to do the passenger

Only downside to painting all the plastics to match is I'm gonna lose the switch "pictures" on the dome light buttons. I plan to tape off the black buttons so they add contrast and so anyone who needs to know will still know what each switch is for. I drive the truck enough to know which is which

anyone know how to remove the rear dome lights? I can get the front piece out without issue, looked at the overhead handles and it looks like I just need to pop a cover and undo a bolt, so now I just need to figure out the rear lights and the visors. Im sure the visors will become apparent how to be removed once the liner is down

I'm looking to swap out my antenna for a colormatched one. Can you give me some info / tips in getting the liner out of the easy enough to swap the antenna?

On my 2014 I removed the windshield. Headliner came right out with very little maneuvering.

redid it in leather to match cocoa dash, put in back the next day.

Reinstalled windshield.

Windshield sealer cost $16,

Take your time and make sure ALL of the sealer is cut, I used a guitar string and a bent bladed knife.

It will come out with zero damage in about just a few minutes.

I'm not selling anything.

Just giving someone a tip to remove headliner.

If you think its extreme removing headliner or windshield I really don't know what to say, maybe you should start by checking air pressure in your tires and move up slowly from there.

I do all my own work with everything I own from the ATV's and boats, to the HVAC in my houses.

Again, not selling anything, just trying to help/inspire folks to do things themselves which is very rare these days.

Pretty simple job, you just have to be careful.

I in no way think removing a headliner is extreme. I think removing the WINDSHIELD to do so, is extreme. Ive replaced a number of headliners in numerous trucks and cars and not one time did ever consider removing the windshield. Would it come out easier with no windshield? Absolutely. Im just saying that removing the windshield to do so is not necessary and is a last resort. I respect that you feel comfortable removing and reinstalling windshields, but i, for one, know that doing so is better left to professionals, as this is a hugely risky proposition. The risk of breakage, leaks, and downright personal safety is too much for most to tackle. If one was set on removing glass, if anything, i would think removing the rear glass would be a better option.

Its a $150 windshield,my back window was an electric slider that cost $300+

Even removing the back window you have to fold the headliner quite a bit.

Removing via the windshield, it comes out with zero folding or creasing, that is the proper way to remove.

Back in the 80's when the headliners were known for coming unglued, taking the windshield out , regluing and reinstalling everything took all of a hour due to no sealer being used.

These days with airbags, sealer is used, you just have to cut it out, no big deal.

Its like removing the hood to pull engine, gotta do it to do the job efficiently.

My philosophy is, if another human can do it , I can to.

So far that has worked for many decades for me and saved me many thousands of $$$.

I don't have the truck anymore. It decided to "pop" into neutral and roll into a playground area one morning when I was visiting my Son's school.

Transfer case was reprogrammed but I didn't trust the "fix" and he was afraid of it, he thought the devil had possessed it like the movie Christine.

The truck was awesome other than that instance.

I decided to do the headliner when my Wife found the leather at a thrift store in Birmingham.

It turned out great but really was just an excercise to show my Son it could be done. I didn't wrap the sunvisors and that looked kinda odd.

Was it worth the trouble for better looks, No.

    • Here's the 2026 order guide - Vehicle Order Guide   RPO code "AS3"?  Not seeing it.  What is it supposed to be?  I see AS3 used a long time ago as some sort of seat option, but its not applicable to the current Suburban.    I see RPO code "AZ3" which is 1st row 40/20/40 split bench.  That is only on LS trim, which LS can't option any of the trick suspension.     2nd row bench power fold RPO code is "ATT".  So your dealer should be able to sort their locator to find matching builds by searching the combo of ATT and Z95 combined to find a 2nd row power fold with MagRide.     You can do the 2nd row power bench AND have MagRide, or Mag with Air on Z71, RST and High Country.     Here's a Z71 with 2nd row power bench and the Z71 Off Road Package which adds the Adaptive Air and MagRide - 2026 Suburban | Details | Vehicle Locator   Here's an RST with 2nd row power bench and the RST Capability Package, and RST Capability adds the Adaptive Air with Magride - 2026 Suburban | Details | Vehicle Locator   I can't find a High Country, but you can do it on there.  Requires the 6.2, and the Sun and Tow pack which allows you to then option the 2nd row power fold.  Black interior only.  High Country comes standard with MagRide and you can order the air if you get the High Country Deluxe, but Deluxe will take you to captain 2nd row.       You can do it at GMC on the AT4 and the regular Denali (not Ultimate) as well.
    • So.  Get this.  On the Chevy regular cab, you can get the factory remote start at the dealer from the accessories catalog.  BUT.  GMC, you can't.   Now...get this...GMC 2 door, you CAN get the power seat.     Go.  Figure.   Anywho.  are you trying to order?  Or locate?  Ordering for 2 door 1/2 tons has been stopped as of April or May?  So you won't be able to order.  You'll have to shop on the ground units or in transit units.     Ordering was stopped because the new trucks are coming.
    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
