Creating spare key for 08 sierra

Hi all, I just bought a used 08 sierra. It only came with 1 key and 1 fob. Instead of going to the dealer, I ordered an extra key blank and fob. They are both oem part. When I received the key blank, the instructions for programing say they are for vins starting with 1 or 4. Mine start with vin 2, Canadian built. Does anyone have instructions for programming vin 2 keys or do I just have to go to a dealer to have it done.

The instructions for vin 1 and 4 are easy btw, just insert working key, turn to on. Then turn off. Within 10 seconds, insert new key. Turn to on. Turn off. The new key is programmed.

My '09 is VIN 3. I tried buying a few cheap blanks online and having them cut locally to program myself. Failed every time.

I went to a local locksmith and they were able to get it done for me. I just refuse to pay the dealer extortion prices.

Ok guys and gals, I have a good update. The keys I bought were Strattec OEM GM Factory Original 07 to 13 GMC Transponder Keys 15921351 692932. I got them off ebay. Today I went to my local locksmith and he cut them for five bucks each, then went out to the truck and programmed them for me. They were very very easy to program. The instructions worked the same for vins that start with 1 and 4.

FYI. The keys are $14.00, no tax, free shipping + cut = $19.00 for each key. Much better than going to the dealership!

It's always better NOT going to a stealership for parts of any kind. For something as simple as a key, they want anywhere between $60-$100 to get you a functioning key. Anyone who pays them their outrageous prices is a fool!

They try to rob you and will lie to you saying things like, it costs that much because of the computer chip, or, we have to program the key to the truck.

Truth is they are crooks and it doesn't cost even half of what stealerships want you to pay and the above post is proof of that. It's nice to find honest people who are not out to rob the customer.

It's bad enough trying to get a working replacement key from stealerships, what they want for a key fob with the key is even worse. Really good to hear you were able to buy a key from an honest business and you were lucky enough to find someone to charge you standard price to cut a key.

The chipped keys at a dealer are expensive. The older non chipped keys are about $8 from the dealer
