6.0 getting 8 speed?

Recommended Posts

I herd the 1500 will be getting 8 speed trans. at some point. Does anyone know if the 6.0 2500 will have one any time soon, or what else they might be changing in the future. Thanks

GM half ton truck got the 8-speed in 2015 with the 6.2, the 2016 5.3 will be getting the transmission as well in the high end models.

I feel strongly that the 2017 HD trucks will be getting a larger/more powerful gas motor and 8-speed transmission. Stay tuned as no one knows but we can only assume...

Supposedly the 2017 HD is getting a diesel update and possibly a transmission update as well. But this is just rumor mill stuff from guys at dealerships.

I know it's specualtion, but what trans update, other than upgrading the Allison to handle more power, could they come out with? Hopefully they don't drop the Allison. That would be catastrophic to their HD lineup

I assume you will see a updated 9-speed version of the Allison, seems how GM owns the Allison trans division and it sells trucks.

The Dmax will get an update, but not just is power. EPA 2018 regs kick in Jan 2018, so the emissions stuff will also come in to play for any Dmax upgrade.

GM only has the Allison 1000 division. Allison is a separate entity from GM for all the other Allison truck transmission products. They may share data and ideas, but that is it.

Forgot to mention, emissions changes will occur again for 2021. The EPA genie is totally out of the bottle, and now that VW has gotten the EPA all riled up, every diesel owner is going to come under scrutiny. What a mess.

Why would they drop Allison, don't they still own Allison ?

No. They are not going to drop the Allison. The Allison is one of the major selling points to getting a Dmax pickup. The 8 speed being talked about would be a robust version of the 8 speed in the 1500 series pickups for the gas equipped HD's. Just like the 6L90 we have now that is a robust 6L80. But all that being said, I am a fan of more gears in either. When a vehicle is working, more gears is always a plus. That is why I have 18 gears in my semi truck. Don't need them all the time and I can skip gears on shifts, but when the pulls are hard it is nice to have them all to keep motor in optimal power band.

Yes, it is a mess.

Expect diesel pickups over $80k after 2018...

A big thanks to the EPA for continuing to prop up the resale value of my 07 LBZ!

Kinda makes one consider scouting out and trying to find a good 'ol pre-emission diesel pickup that is in good shape. Even if it needed a new motor, at least it would still be a non-emission variety that would be cheaper to replace, maintain, and operate.
