Switchblade key

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I've done some searching on this and I see its been asked a couple times but Ive have yet to see anyone having tried this or telling there experience. I know that the switchblade key completely opened will hit the shifter. However my thought is why can't i have the switchblade key half opened (as pictured) from the looks of it when half opened the key is actually shorter then the stock key and it seems to stay at half opened position pretty easily. Therefore would this be a DIY that would be easy to accomplish? i.e. if i have an extra programmed key already and a second hand switch blade key could the swap be done?

You will have to force it to only go to half-open? My wife's car has that key and it flys to full open, so it would be more work than the standard key IMO.

And not much more compact if any?

Also I wonder if a heavy key ring would pull it back to the "OFF" position?

I wouldn't say the fob wont work, it might be able to be programmed. Only downside I see if some fobs are a one time use only. Meaning once they are married to the BCM they can only be used that one time. I don't know how many fobs the truck BCM can handle, it may only be able to handle 2 fobs or 10 fobs. Example was the BCM in the G8 could only handle 2 fobs, after that the module had to be replaced if for any reason the fobs needed to replaced.

I had that style key with my VW and I loved it, but I'm thinking this one isn't worth it for you. Just my opinion. Sounds like way too much BS for me anyway. I do admit though, the key fob does leave a little to be desired. Feels kind of chincy for a truck in this price range. Oh well. One of the only features my LTZ doesn't have that I wish it did is the keyless start, would be nice. But I digress...

From OM:

Programming Transmitters to
the Vehicle
Only RKE transmitters programmed to this vehicle will work. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased and
programmed through your dealer.
Each vehicle can have up to eight transmitters programmed to it.
See your dealer for transmitter programming.

Fairly cheap upgrade, I'm guessing all LTZ's have the correct option code, just a module and two new fobs plus about $50 worth of dealer labor to get it added.
