oil pump going bad?

You would probably have lots of metal flakes/shavings in the oil if the bearings were going bad. You could cut your filter open next oil change and look at what comes out of it. You probably would have a loud rod knock too. You'd only really know that the oil pump couldn't keep up anymore if you did the pickup tube o-ring and still had low pressure, but no metallic flakes or scary stuff in the filter.

So I get my truck back today and the shop I go to informed me that my gauge cluster is reading correct that once my truck is warm it does drop to 5 psi even with a mechanical gauge, they told me that they used a heavier oil (15-w40) & Lucas oil stabilizer. They also informed me that my waterpump was leaking and were able to correct that & a new thermostat but not the oil pressure issue, they've been saying that I'm gonna need a new engine for the truck if it persists but I'm not convinced that's the right fix, gonna hit up my local chevy dealer and hopefully get somewhere with them on this and see what they say on it. In your utmost opinion, what do you guys think could it be the $2.50 o ring or a bad pump???

Lucas oil stabilizer as a remedy? Personally, I'd be very suspect of methods from a shop like that...

I'd still pull the pan and do the o-ring before an oil pump or motor. A motor seems like throwing a huge amount of money at a problem that could be the o-ring or the oil pump. Unless you've got tons of metal in the filter and/or pan, I'd still pursue the o-ring and then pump first.

I spoke with my local Chevy dealer this morning and when I described what was going on they were under the impression that it is the pump that went bad, the service writer that i spoke with did ask what the mileage is on my truck and all I could tell him is what I've put on it being that it has a Jasper unit from a previous owner. He said that those motors are notorious for having the pumps go bad and that hes had 2 of them replaced on his own vehicles. Come Monday I'll definitely find out whats going on with this alarm and hopefully fully rectified

How about some more information on this engine. Two pages of post and now it is mentioned that the engine is a Jasper rebuild...how many miles are on it? When was it put in? Is it still under their warranty?

I've had my truck going on 5 years, the engine was replaced prior to me getting it. It's a jasper 5.3, I myself have put 50k miles on it but I don't know what the previous owner did with it, I believe that the jasper warranty is only good for 3 years but I'm not 100% sure on that.

So I get my truck back from Chevy a short while ago after dropping it off at 7:30 this morning and they told me that the truck was all set and ready to go. Spoke with the service writer and he told me that the only code that they got when it came to the low oil pressure was for the sensor. I'm not in my truck 10 minutes from picking it up and the low oil pressure alarm is going off AGAIN!!! I asked the service writer about when my independent shop told me that its not holding pressure he couldn't give me a response as to what was causing it only that the sensor was bad so tomorrow I'm gonna have to take a ride back there and find out whats going on for a 2nd time. I'm getting annoyed to the point that I'm almost tempted to take it and trade it in for something else.

That sucks. Are there any better local shops you can find on a recommendation?

Are you capable of pulling the pan yourself and doing the o-ring to rule that out?

So, I came back from speaking with another local shop and they said that my truck sounds good but until they put a mechanical gauge on the engine to see whats going on they can't say for sure what's causing the low oil pressure but they did say that there's a screen under the oil pressure switch and that there's tsb for it. A lot of what I've read and asked about seems like it was from '07? and up. Is there a possibility that this screen is in there from a newer motor or could this be a normal thing from '99 and up when these motors came out???

I honestly don't know whether the screen is in there for all years. Someone else might...

Everything that I've come across for that type of a filter was for a lot of the newer models, nothing listed for my year truck but being that I don't have much to lose I'll give it a whirl and see what I can find out.

    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
    • I’ve own several successful businesses. I’ve bought homes and lived in different states. I’d witness several generations buy homes and survive in different economic circumstances. You get awful sippy when people have different experiences than you do. You live a life. I’ve lived a life. It seems our experience has been different. You can point out generalized statistics. Some people learn how to thrive when the odds are against them. Living in different states does make a difference in a persons quality of life and economic outcomes and opportunities. That’s a fact Jack. It’s my truth, my life. Hard work and long hours the right environment made my families life easier. And yes moving to a different state increased the odds of that happening. Stats are generalized. People who thrive don’t make excuses. They beat the odds. Others get mad and point to those statistics. I guess that’s you. My post pointed out how you helped people beat the odds. Somehow your panties got in a wad. Go figure.
    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.
    • Point of the post sir was that while both wages and cost are rising EVERYWHERE; the cost is rising faster EVERYWHERE than the ability to buy EVERYWHERE. • Probably a one and done post, but do you have a CEL on the dash? Was having issues with my transmission, fortunately only a week, and it turned out to be the transmission harness. Valve body was in good shape, so new harness with all the sensors attached, new fluid, and filter. Seems to have worked so far?
