86 k 1500 loud whine..

Hey, I just got an 86 gmc k 1500. I test drove it when it was warm and everything seemed good except for low end bogg which I chalked up to a carb issue or the 20 year old plugs that were in there. Once I got it home and it cooled off -10c I started it And could hear a fairly loud whine coming from underneath sounds like the tranny or very close to it. The whine seems to be loudest in park or neutral and follows the engine rpm. It still makes the sound when in gear but not quite as loud and also follows rpm. With a delayed shift into gear maybe a second or two. But it lessens and shift quicker as it warms up. My first thought was the tranny pump is starving for fluid and maybe I should change the filter. Or is the pump toast or is this a torque convertor issue?? Any advice where to start would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Torque converter dying makes some unsettling sounds. Some grinding sounds.. and your fluid will burn.

Are you sure its not the power steering pump?

Ya definatley not power steering there is no shuddering or grinding and I can hold the brake down and rev it up and it doesn't seem to slip or make any noise once its warm...

If your fluid levels look good, and it's not burnt, then maybe something is plugged. Or as you wrote, maybe the pump is going out.

Maybe try a new filter and see what happens.

Is this the original trans?

Fluid is like new nice red and not burnt at all. As for the tranny is a turbo 400 but I have no idea if its original but wouldn't be surprised.
