6.0 oil consumption

A friend of mine has a 2001 2500HD with the 6.0 with 20k on it. It never used oil and just the other day the low oil light came on. He checked it and there wasn't any showing on the dip stick. He put two qts in before it came up to the full mark. He also noticed that the cold start knock seems to be worse.

Anyone else out there haveing the same problems? I told him to go to the dealer and start being a "squeeky wheel", maybe if he complained enough he might get some action and a new motor. I know it is a long shot but he has nothing to loose but his time, right?

I have never had a problem with mine in 10K miles.

It certainly seems like something I would bring to the dealers attention.

Got a few 6.0's. Mine and a shop truck... shop truck has 73000 miles burns no oil.  Mine has 35000 and so change. no oil burning.. Right now I'm running Rotella 15W-40 in the truck.. it likes it better than a heavier or lighter oil.. I hated that #### 5W-30 that was in it.  Had the lube characteristics of gravel.

I have the cold start knock problem since 24000 miles on my 2000 2500 6.0 liter V8. Now has 30000 miles and sounds like a diesel the 1st 5 minutes its running and under any load. Can't trade the POS since the dealer knows about the problems and I won't try to stick someone privately with it. I got the extended motor warranty (big deal) and its only for 3 years or 100K whichever comes first. Get the dealer to hand you a copy of TSB #01-06-01-028 and then immediately call GM at 1-800-222-1020 and get the free extended motor warranty. I have owned Chevy trucks since 1972 (1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, crew cab, duallys, etc) and this is may be my last one. I tried to get a new chevy 1 ton dually and the dealer wouldn't even call me back. They obviously aren't hungry enough and I refuse to beg to spend $40K

15W-40?! Sh#t man, that's thick -- why not just use straight 90 weight?? :smash:

I've got CSK on my 6.0, which has about 15K on it. If I'm down 1/2 quart between oil changes (which I do every 3K) I find it odd. In other words, I'm not burning too much, at the moment anyway.
