4.8 vs 5.3 GMC Sierra 1500 First Truck

Hello everyone I am new here and I was looking for a little help. I am looking for my first truck its going to be used and I have one in mind its a 2010 gmc sierra 1500 but it has a 4.8L in it and I was wondering if it was going to be enough. I am not doing much towing other than a 16ft lund boat and a small 6ft trailer with an atv or snowmobile on it for distances of less than 300 miles. The main reason I am going to use it is for hunting purposes may have to go through snow and muddy fields and then for ice fishing and driving on frozen lakes with snow on the top. I was wondering if the 4.8L would get the job done or would I need the 5.3. Tell me some pros and cons of the 4.8 and overall opinion. Thanks for the help.

Well, I've never heard of anyone saying "Man, that's just too much power...."

 

Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I would personally go for the 5.3.

Got a weight for the boat and trailer? Approximate?

 

4.8 would probably get the job done and them some but a 5.3 of the same year or newer would have the 6 speed auto which would be the deciding factor to me as the 6 speed makes the 4L60 look bad.

The boat and probably the heaviest thing I would haul with it would be under 1000lbs the main concern would be does it have enough torque and horsepower to get me through a not so ideal field with snow or mud and across a frozen lake with snow on top.

A 2010 1500 with a 4.8 will have more than enough power to do what you're asking.

4.8 doesn't have the afm crap does it? I hate it on my 5.3.. U should be fine with 4.8 i personally have had all 5.3s in mine only cause ive always wanted v8...

I own a 2011 with 4.8 and do exactly what you are going to do with your truck. I tow a 14' and 16' boats. My utility trailer, take it out on frozen lakes ice fishing. Never not had enough power. Dosent have the afm which is nice. Couldn't go wrong with either I would say.

As mentioned, the 4.8 does not have the often troublesome AFM (cylinder deactivation). Big plus for the 4.8.

 

The downside is that the 4.8 gets the old 4L60 4 speed trans. The 5.3 would get the 6L90, which is far superior in nearly every way.

 

I loved my 4.8, but in this case, I'd go with the 5.3 / 6 speed combo if you can swing it.

We've had several 6 cylinder chevies over the years as work trucks in my company. They never got any better gas mileage than the v8's and were underpowered.

 

I'm semi retired but I still have a 2010 6 cylinder 4x4 ext cab silverado company truck in my driveway. It has less towing capacity than the colorado I just traded off if I remember correctly.

 

My 2015 5.3 v8 gets better gas mileage.

The 4.8L should do everything that you need it to do with the proper gearing. Before you purchase that specific truck, make sure you find out which gears it has. Towing is not only about engine size, the gears make a world of difference when pulling weight. The things you mention should not give that truck any issues as long as you don't over load the thing. The best thing about those 4.8L pickups is they did not get AFM slammed into them so you won't have to worry aboput any type of oil usage.

A good set of tires and you will have no problems with the 4.8 power. As long as the tires are turning and you're not high centered and you'll save money on fuel.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
