I decided I didn't want my bed to rust out and it's rusting bad with my drop in so I've been helping my buddy tape, sand and shoot rhino liners the past three weeks for a free liner.. by the way trust me 400.00 is well worth the time a person puts into a truck to spray a rhino liner.. If they get it done in less than 4 hours than your getting a no sand, single coat, low material POS.. It will be less material but it will look nice and not hold up. but anyways I have to give it up I've been against them forever until I sprayed mine in the correct way.  I got the quicky before and it fell apart. Anyways a typical bed gets about 9 gallons of rhino to coat it over rail.  I put 16 gallons of rhino in my truck under rail and the liner is a heavy 1/4 to 3/8" everywhere.. It's holding up great.. So if your liner is thin and they do it fast tell them you know what's up and you want a good liner sprayed.  Also make sure they DA your bed down and don't just hit it with a buffer with a scratch pad it's the cheap fast way.  He told me that most of the time that's what they do to get better returns on their money..  Hope this helps..

Bang for the buck is it better then just a bed linner?

 

When it comes time to sell It I would think you would be better off as you could remove the drop in and walla.. You have this truck that looks like you never haluled anything in it.  IMHO

I love my rhino liner. I had them spray it about a quarter of an inch thick on the bed and on the sides and had a nice lil overlay put on the bed rails. It looks good and has held up superb. Its all about the quality of the independent vendor who does the work.

 

Since I've gone sprayed I'll never go back. My older S-10 had a drop in and it scratched the bed and tailgate all to #### and back, and my rhino liner is just as thick ore maybe thicker than that drop in was on my 91.

Good luck getting a droppin to not scratch the crap out of your bed.  I took mine out last weekend to clean under it and my be was scratched to Sh!t.  I want to get a spray in someday but just cant afford it right now.

My uncle took my 03 farm rig up today to have the spray in liner installed .

It looks pretty good he said he got it in about 8:00 and they called him at about noon and said it was done .

It looks pretty good over the rail black in color

I agree that a drop in "has the potential" to scratch the bed up.  However with a "Spray in" you never really can take it out.  So............  With that said what makes the spray in soooo much better?  I mean if you get a crappy job done your screwed and then they are going to have to sand the s*%t out of your bed to do a good job anyway.  So in general I would guess that the Rino isn't that great of a option if you want to be able to revert back to just a bed with no liner.......

When you have a truck re shot they don't sand they old one out.  They take a DA with 40 grit rough up the finish of the liner, wipe it with acetone, shoot a special primer on the old liner then spray right over top.. FYI

I have an 'over the rail' Linex spray in.  

 

As was mentioned earlier, it is all up to the quality of work done by the dealer and how well they prep and spray.

 

Our local Linex dealer (Decker Linex) :thumb: is absolutely excellent.  You can go to the county fair here and see all kinds of pickups with many different kinds of sprayed in liners.  It is extremely easy to spot the Decker jobs.  They are top quality.

 

It is also easy to see the differences between the quality of each dealer's work when you can see 2 Linex or 2 Rhinos side by side but done by different dealers.  It is very easy to spot the quality work.

 

For anyone thinking about getting a spray in, ask people who already have them and after looking at the quality of the job on their vehicle, then ask where they got it done.

Heres my take on the whole bedliner situation. They are supposed to protect from big dings, dents, and corrosion that will eventually cause your bed to rust and corrode...

 

Both types work really well with the dings and dents... However every drop I've ever seen taken out of a vehicle has never protected against trapping moisture underneath them and have scratched the #### out of the bed and enabled rust to start forming.

 

With a spray on, they are gonna scuff your clearcoat and then spray the liner in and its a permanent deal. Also most of the reputable manus give a lifetime warranty on the spray ons (I.E. Line X, Rhino) and will repair them free of charge.

 

The spray protects against corrosion and what not, and mine is thick enough that I don't think im gonna have any dents anytime soon.

 

If you plan on buying a bedliner or a spray on to prevent from just scratching then you might as well not buy either, because the drop in is gonna scratch the bed sooner or later all to heck, and trap moisture underneath it thus rusting the bottom out. The spray ons are gonna just scuff the clearcoat so that it adheres to it and its not going to let moisture thru at all.

 

I've always approached the bedliner deal as it should protect from deep gouges, dents, dings, chemicals, moisture being trapped, and etc. But never from scratches because regardless of what you do with either its either gonna get scuffed or scratched to #### with the drop in.

 

At least with a spray on, the only thing thts scuffed is the clearcoat, and once the spray on is put in its never gonna get worse than that. With the drop in I had in my 91, when I pulled the drop in out, there were spots where it had rubbed so bad the primer was showing  :chevy:

 

No matter how much you screw those things in and etc, they will always move no matter what, I found it out the hard way.

    • I have a 2018 Silverado Custom with 156k on the odometer. In the last month I've replaced the plugs, wires and the driver side engine mount. My wife just returned from a trip of about 1500 miles and told me the brakes are making a grinding noise when applied. I drove it and looked it over and this is what I found with the driver's side rear rotor.   I'm going to order new pads and check about having the rotor resurfaced. Hopefully this is easier than the last 2 jobs.   Peace  
    • Any update if the new valve cover help with the oil consumption?  I have a 2014 GMC sierra and my truck is consuming a lot of oil so I’m wondering if replacing the driver side valve cover will stop some of the oil consumption. Thanks 
    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
