Cold Start Issue

Does yours also have a weird rattle or something on cold start for about 1 second? Mine does but only on cold start.

But I agree it takes longer for sure

Not that, I have an aftermarket catback exhaust.

I am thinking it might be the bendix gear on the starter retracting slowly???

thank god somebody asked about this, i was wondering about it this morning when i started her up. DI has some weird side effects (the ticking still drives me nuts)

As JLR1164 says, it's because the the DI motor.

Assisted start/block heater? I'm surprised. Those temps are common in the northern tier and Canada. I've not had to use a block heater at -20f in decades.

DI engines take long to crank because the fuel pressure needs to build up.

 

On these new DI V8's, there is a fuel pump that sends fuel from the fuel tank, to a second fuel pump which is underneath your intake manifold. That pump has to pressurize fuel to 2,000 PSI before the engine will start. The colder it is, the longer it takes for the fuel to reach 2,000 PSI.
