2014 GMC SIERRA 5.3L Diablosport I1000 tune, help!?!?!

Hi all, after being in the dealer multiple times and starting one of the biggest threads on here, http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/169997-transmission-fix-finally-for-14-15-sierra-silverado-woooot/my transmission definately felt better from my friend at the dealer. Tonight I purchased a diablosport i1000 intune programmer for a good deal off my local craigslist. I loaded the 85/91 flex tune on purchase to make sure it wasn't vin locked. I chose the default firm shift setup as well, all I can say with trying to find a road that isn't icy is wow. I am very impressed.

Questions,

I don't have e85 within 200 miles of me, and have always ran either conoco or exxon 91, is this appropriate for this tune? BTW I am at 3200 feet of elevation.

Is it ok that I updated the tune before updating the module? I am updating the module now, after the fact, would it be smart to rewrite the tune? (It has been writing updates on my windows 10 pc for 30+ minutes and still going)

I only have a cut exhaust with a flowmaster super 40 and no flapper, catch can, anything else that would really open this tune up?

I know from previous open source tuning with subaru, that many fello's post there tunes for others to try, is there a place for this I am not finding?

From guys running this canned setup with 3.42 gears and a 5.3l 20" wheels, any advice? I have a local tuner here I trust to do a custom tune, but if I could save some bucks with forum advice I am down.

I am running 5.3L 3.42 gears and 20" wheels. I will say the tuner is really nice quality, looks quality and is very easy to use. I would recommend.

I ordered the I2 a few weeks back and love it!! I'm running the 93 octane tune with firm shifts, throttle boost @ 0%, speed limiter removed, torque management and DOD on and when I first installed it I lost some MPG's but they have since leveled off and are back to where they were before. When I first installed the tuner I was running the 87 octane tune with firm shifts, 15% throttle boost, speed limiter removed, TM off and DOD on. I ran that tune for a couple of weeks and liked it and wanted to try the 93 and there is a noticeable difference between them. The only complaint that I have along with some others is that for some reason there is a hesitation with the shift from 1 to 2 when turning up the throttle booster over what the tune itself already has but have since went back to 0% and it went away. There are several people on the Diablosport forum that are having the same issue and they can't seem to get it worked out, but since switching back to 0% like others said they did on the forum it no longer hesitates when shifting from 1 to 2. I now love driving this truck as compared to the factory settings, it's much more responsive and the trans shifts way better over the factory settings.

I was never overly impressed with the 87 tune but really like the 91 flex tune. Any reason you decided to leave TM on? I had it on for awhile then it's since been off for awhile now. I have DOD on also, lost about 1mpg with off. So there is something to that 1-2 shift lag. I recall hearing a little about that awhile back. I've noticed it myself a few times. Normally on hard acceleration. Is that when you noticed it? I thought I had read people noticing it when using E85 (which I do) but may be wrong about that. I do have my throttle boost at +6. I'm gonna have to go back to 0 now and test it out.

I turned the TM back on after trying it with it off and getting a lot of wheel spin from initial takeoff in wet weather. Yes the 1-2 shift lag was terrible with the throttle boost set above anything but 0, once I went back to 0 it went away and haven't noticed it since. I'm still currently running the 93 tune but I am considering going back to the 87 and switching back to 100% gas with no ethanol for the price per gallon cost and the better fuel mileage. I will say overall though I am more than happy with the results of the tuner, my truck drives so much better and the transmission shifts far better than stock.

Ahh yes I remember that thread. Getting everyone's hopes up then crushing them. How could you. Hahaha.

If you are usually using conoco or exxon 91 and have the diablo 91 flex tune installed I'd say you are all set.

If you've just updated the handheld tuner with the latest updates from DiabloSport You'll wanna 're-install the tune on the truck.

What I've found to be the most helpful is beside reading these forums and getting opinions and advice from others is just trying out the pair of canned tunes and tweaking the different settings until you find the setup you like. Most seem to use the firm shift, I myself prefer the hard shift setting. A lot of guys want DOD off. I've decided to keep mine on since I had a 1mpg hit with it off. And I just hope these new trucks don't end up with the oil consumption issues like the previous generation.

I've not seen anyone actually posting their custom tunes anywhere but I've saved off a couple different ones of my own just to make it easier to reinstall and not have to go thru all the settings again since I always remove it before going to the dealer and with my larger tires I can never remember the exact size setting I need to use to make my speedometer correct (cus it's NOT the obvious one that matches the actual size of my tires).

I agree you do get a lot of wheel spin on wet pavement with TM off. I need to put my tune back on after my oil change yesterday so I'll definitely try the 0 setting. At this point I'm pretty committed to E85, the price spread right now is horrible in my area but I really like the 91 tune over the 87 so I'm sticking it out for now. The better tranny shifting in all honesty for me is the biggest thing though as it affects me the most in my daily driving. The better performance is like a fun bonus for those times you get on the gas hard.

Yes, even after all the dealer trips and getting it better the canned diablo tune seems much better. I haven't been able to put much miles on the truck, but have had a lot of reading and it seems everyone is trying a little of everything but no perfect sauce yet. Besides of course the custom tune.

For now I am leaving it on the diablotune running 91 octane and getting some miles on to see how it acts. I don't like the early shifting from 1 to 2 and hoping it learns out of it the more I drive.

Questions I haven't seen answered yet...if the diablo canned tune is tweaked, can you reload the can tune back on or does it store the tweaked results as the canned tune going forward.

Also, if I were to get a custom tune, should I wait till summer as I know timing retards much more under heat soak? I would think it would be better to wait and run logs then?

Still enjoying the canned tune, love how it will hold the gears longer, but I myself like first gear to hold even when running slow a little higher mpg, hopefully it learns that, and if not a custom tune or tweaking it can help.

Yes and no. Your tweaks get saved as another tune file on the device. If you look on the device with your computer you'll see files calls something like "ECM_12659744_LastTuneWritten" and "TCM_24271131_LastTuneWritten". These are you current installed tweaked tunes. If you copy these two files off onto your computer, rename them, and copy them back to the intune you'll then have custom tune files on it each time you plug it in the truck. Each time you plug it in your truck and choose the tune option it asks you if you want to keep your current customized changes or start with the default settings so you never actually lose the stock canned tunes and can always go back to them.

In the TCM tune you can modify the shift rpm. Its separated out for each shift, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc and by part throttle, wot, and tow haul mode. I have not modified these settings but maybe this will allow you to get your first gear shift where you want it.

There's some comments in this thread and others about tuning over in the Gen V Small Block Engine, Drivetrain, & Exhaust section..

This may be a little off topic but with the Diablo tuners can you calibrate MPH? I am going to have a 6" lift and 35s put on and was hoping this was something I could accomplish with the tuner

You absolutely can. That was the main reason I got mine a few years back. I was looking for a device to correct my speedometer on my 2005 when I added bigger tires and I stumbled upon the Diablosport. I now used it on my 2014, also with larger tires.

For those who use the 87 Octane tune, do you guys experience the downshift clunk as much? My Trinity doesn't have the 87 Octane tune for some odd issue that Diablo is trying to figure out, but I do notice once the vehicle is warmed up, my shifting becomes clunky and I can sort of feel it as it DOWNSHIFTS at times. Feels like my company work truck thats 13 years old with 280k miles on it. Does the Diablo 87 Tune fix that?

I have mastered being able to replicate mine doing the downshift clunk. I even have mine at the dealer and they even a unnormal loud clunk when the truck down shifts after I let off the gas but said that it was Normal operation. I,would be courious to know if a tuner would, help with this. Another post I read today, the guy was friends with a dealer and since he knew him he was 1 of a select few that the dealer picked for a beta test tune and it got rid of his and he was absolutely thrilled how his truck,is acting and driving know.
