Fuel Gauge issues on 6.0

I have a 2000 GMC Sierra with 100,000 on it. My fuel gauge does not work on long trips, but on stops and go's it does find. The gauge will freeze in its place until I turn the truck off and then it will reset itself. So like every said the sending unit is bad and with the miles to go ahead an replace the whole fuel pump. Which is what I did. And now I still have the same issues...... I can be in park, just idling and watch that gauge move. Any ideas????

This problem comes up with a newbie at least twice a week, is it in the FAQ section?

Answer, get your stepper motors changed and recalibrated, they are cheap on ebay, but you need to be able to DE-solder and solder to install new ones

in the instrument panel. he's saying that it's common for the gauge mechanism to fail.

IF you dont know anything about this problem and dont posses the skills to do small DE soldering, and re soldering and basic mechanical abilities, its best to just use a cheap repair service and get it done that way..

I thought the stepper motor issue was common with 2003 and newer. That generally with '99 - '2002 it was fuel pump sending unit issues.

This is a very common issue on these trucks. Happened to my 01 Silverado 6.0. I replaced the sending unit ($25) and it fixed it. However, I would highly recommend replacing the fuel pump and the sending unit. A brand new AC delco fuel pump and sending unit is only about $155 on eBay. You'll have to take off the bed, the bolts are pretty easy to get at. You'll need 4 people to lift it off. After that the job is very easy
