Outside rear view mirror

While driving down the highway a couple of days ago, the glass fell out of my left outside rear view mirror. I guess 20 years is the limit for the adhesive they used to attach it.

I checked with a local Napa store and with lmctruck.com to get a replacement, but all they carry is the whole assembly. If I'm going to replace that, I'll look at salvage yards first since my truck is 1996 GMC Sierra K1500 with the power adjusting mirrors.

It looks like I'd have to remove a triangular interior trim panel to access the mounting bolts/nuts. Is that correct? Is there a trick to removing the panel, or do I just pry it off with a putty knife or flat blade screw driver? Is that where the electrical connection is?

Thank you.

If it just like my 95 press in and push up on it. should come off. ill tell you i just put new mirrors on mine and it was a pain, small hole to get three nuts off.

Or you could just go to a glass place (like one that replaces windshields) and have them replace it with a mirror. You'll have 2 choices, they can cut a piece or order a factory mirror and then they attach either one. When I had my 98 I broke the mirror and the assembly was completely fine. Went to a glass place and they ordered a replacement mirror and they attached it in 5 minutes with double sided adhesive circle pads. So no need to get a whole assembly just to replace the mirror.

Thank you both for the advice. I'll check into replacing to glass first to see how much it will cost. Sure would be a lot easier, since it sounds like replacing the assembly is a pain.

Someone clipped my driver side mirror in my 94 c1500 and I was able to get just the mirror from speedy glass here in Canada. So my advice is to look into any of those windshield places and maybe they can order something in
