Swimming Pool Blues

Does anyone else out there own a pool and ever had problems with it at the beginning of the season?

 

We opened ours up a week ago Friday and it was green. Had a pool place come in and open it up, ie take the cover off, set up the pump and install all the stuff that needed installed. Anyway they added $150 worth of chemicals and the stupid pool is still green. I even went as far as to change out the sand in the filter thinking it wasn't filtering like it should. I have swept and swept like crazy sturring up what i could to get it into the water so the filter can filter it out and even added more shock treatment and the darn thing is still light green to teal. Any suggestions? This pool has really gotten me

 

Here I thought our boat was a money pit. Now this new pool we have with the new house is taking over. Been open over a week and we still can't swim in it.

We had that problem every year when we were on soft swim. Had to shock it with chlorine to get the green out and then wait to put in the soft swim. Cost a fortune. This year we are going to stay on chlorine even though my dad and I are alergic to it. Hopefully the cost differance will be worth it.

we switched to a different type of chemical (biogard???) it actually isnt a chemical and the last 2 yrs havent had any problems. It doesnt use chlorine but something called a,b,and c

I did some reaserch on pools since all this started. I read about the soft swim from Bioguard. It sounds like a really good product but from what all I read it is a little bit more on the picky side to keep it all set and in balance. Some thing that me being a new pool owner is not ready for for the first season of owning a pool.

 

I just shocked the pool good this time. Put a 220 line in there and threw the switch. Man you should have seen the fireworks when the electric shock hit it. Wow.

 

Just kidding. I did throw more burn out 35 in there today along with Banish an algiside. Hopefully we will be able to swim in the next few days. Man what a pain this thing is. Figures I would run into this on my first ownership of a pool.

 

oh well paitence paitence I guess.

It might take a lot stronger shock than you imagine. Once it's stable, I keep the chlorine on the high side but if you have blondes in the family, WATCH OUT! A couple of years ago I turned their hair green. What kind of a cover did you have on it? We have the extremely strong mesh type that stretches over the pool and then cover that with a tarp that won't admit light. No light=no algae.

Ok bear with me. We just bought the house in Dec and the pool was a bonus to us. It had a mesh cover on it that is the kind you can walk on without sinking into the pool. No other cover so the sun light got in and the weather here in NC was or has been warm for a month or so. I guess a new cover would work but not for what they want to cover this 12x26 pool, at least that is what I think it's size is. I did another treatment of shock so we will see in the next day or so. The cover over the mesh isn't a bad idea for next year. You can get those cheap huge ones at Wally world right?

Coosa is in Alabama...go there pretty often.

 

Eno and Jordan are nasty ass polluted places. I recently did work around Penny's Bend and people have screwed that place up bad.

its actually not hard at all to take care of. You take a water sample to the pool store every 2 wks to a month (or if something happens to the water like it becomes cloudy) and they tell you what to add and it has always corrected the problem. Its also much safer and less irritating over chlorine (2 golden retrivers who love to swim)

That mesh cover is what we have. I got a heavy duty tarp from Harbor Freight and cut a weep hole in the center. The two years after we got the mesh cover were the only two years the pool was ugly when it was opened. The thinner tarps only last 1 year.

our 10 yr old golden has been swimmng in our pool (2 of them we got a new one 2 yrs ago to replace our old one) for 10 yrs and has never hurt the liner. He doesnt even go anywhere near the liner because he is scared someone will make him get out He also goes in our inflatable rafts and doesnt hirt those (guess doggs like to sunbath also )
