1998 GMC Sierra K1500 5.0L p0466

1998 GMC Sierra V8 K1500 5.0 V8.

Scanned a code of p0466.

Changed the purge solenoid, code came back.

Checked the voltage on the purge vent and it was 11.5v. Connected a 12v power supply to the vent and the plunger worked fine. Cleaned the hose. Cleared the code and the code came back.

Decided to take it to the dealer to do the scan with their equipment. Dealer called and stated that it might be the fuel tank pressure sensor and quoted me a $525 cost on top of the $112 for the scan. He also said if that does not fix the issue it might be the purge vent that I tested. Am not authorizing the work at this moment.

Would anyone know if the pressure sensor could be the problem? I thought that would create a different code.

Could it still be the purge vent that sits next to the canister?

My truck runs fine with no issues and only has 101,000 miles. I just can not get it DEQ here and my tags have expired.

Any help appreciated.

I was stumped at fuel tank pressure sensor.

I did not see one for the 96-98..

did not know they had one.

as tanks get old, they swell.. this challenges the straps, changes pressures.

How old is all your stuff?

I recently popped a strap right off the cross member. I learned I went too tight with it.

should be some slop, like a .25 inch wiggle.

it is so easy to just swap out everything as brand new.

tank, full pump assembly. .some even come with straps.

Hey, thanks for the note.

Everything is still factory equipment as far as the tank and fuel pump goes.

Rockuato shows a pressure sensor part #16238399.

Are you saying to just replace the fuel pump and the straps? I am not even close to being an auto mechanic, but I do all the minor work like fuel filter, belts, oil changes, etc. I looked at some videos which showed I can unbolt and tilt the bed to get to the fuel pump. Would it be worth replacing the purge vent to see if that clears the code?

Thanks again.

Report from the dealership:

" Found p0466 set in ecm. attempted to test vent solenoid operations but was unable due to excessive vacuum evap system. Tested fuel tanks pressure sensor and found sensor internally shorted. replacement of sensor needed then system retested for proper vent solenoid operation."

Ordered the very inexpensive sensor so I at least have it when I look at the fuel pump.

Going to buy an air impact wrench which I see everyone using to loosen their truck bed bolts.

If anyone has any suggestions, please write.

Jank.

PS: Excuse the goofy writing, but this is how I think when doing something not done before.

P0446 Got the code wrong.

Solved:

The solution was replacing the " fuel pressure sensor" on the fuel pump.

$13.50.

Did the tilt the bed option which was very, very simple. I got two short 2x6 pieces, screwed the together, and on their side I lodged three sets between the frame and the bed. Front, middle and back end. Very confident that it was safe to reach in there to pull and replace sensor.
