GM 6l45, 6l50, 6l80, 6l90 transmission info needed

Hello,
I'm working on a project that requires a single reduction that is approximately 4:1, thus I'm looking into these transmissions for the parts. I'm trying to figure out how the first gear works so I can get the appropriate parts. Is only one planetary required for the reduction (I don't care about the direction of the output)? And if so what is the output: planetary, ring, or sun? Also can any give me some dimensions of the planetaries? I have been unable to find the dimensions.

In Drive Range (D) 1st gear, torque from the engine is multiplied through the torque converter and transmission gearsets to the vehicle’s drive shaft. The planetary gears operate in reduction to achieve a 1st gear starting ratio of approximately 4.027:1.

 

• The manual shift shaft (508) and the manual valve (354) are

in the Drive position.

 

1 Power from Torque Converter

The turbine shaft with 4-5-6 clutch assembly (56) is driven by the converter turbine.

 

2 Input Internal Gear Driving

The input internal gear is located in the turbine shaft with 4-5-6 clutch assembly (56). The input internal gear drives the input carrier pinion gears which rotate around the stationary input sun gear (53), thus driving the input carrier assembly(52) in reduction. The input carrier is splined to the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5 reverse clutch assembly (51), which is rotating in the same direction as the turbine shaft but in reduction.

 

3 1-2-3-4 Clutch Applied

The 1-2-3-4 clutch is applied and holds the 1-2-3-4 clutch hub assembly (61), which is splined to the output carrier rear sun gear (489).

 

4 Output Carrier Rear Sun Gear Driving

The output carrier rear sun gear (489) is splined to the 1-2-3-4 clutch hub assembly (61) and rotates at the same speed and the same direction as the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5 reverse clutch assembly (51).

 

5 Output Carrier Rear Inner Pinion Gears Driving

The output carrier rear sun gear drives the inner pinion gears of the rear carrier assembly in the opposite direction of the sun gear.

 

6 Output Carrier Rear Outer Pinion Gears Driving

The rear inner planetary pinion gears drive the outer pinion gears in the opposite direction, which is the same direction as the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5 reverse clutch assembly. The outer pinion gears are in mesh with the output rear inner pinion gears and the output internal rear gear.

 

7 Low and Reverse Clutch Released

The low and reverse clutch releases before the 1-2 shift occurs which will allow the low clutch sprag outer race to rotate freely.

 

8 Low Clutch Sprag Assembly Holding

The power transferred to the output carrier assembly (68) by the output rear outer pinion gears attempts to rotate the carrier, but the carrier is held stationary by the low clutch sprag assembly (467). When the throttle is released, however, the low clutch sprag will overrun which allows the vehicle to coast, at least briefly until the TCM determines engine braking is required. At that time, the low and reverse clutch will apply and hold the low clutch sprag outer race.

 

9 Output Carrier Internal Rear Gear Driven

With the output carrier assembly (68) held, the output carrier outer pinion gears drive the internal rear gear (497) to achieve the 1st gear starting ratio of approximately 4.027:1

    • The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.  
    • Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
    • I can't believe that could possibly be the case. It should be 36mo/100k miles from installation. Then again, it also seems like since a dealership installed it, it'd all be in the system and you wouldn't need to worry about registering, either. Shows you what I know. 😄 Hope this one outlives the warranty!
    • I haven't seen inventory recovery from COVID.    In the few random times I 'build my own' truck or SUV, no one has the exact one I want.   GM has been working to lower incentives too for a long time.    A $500 incentive isn't getting me off the couch to go truck shopping.
