Front suspension Question

Recommended Posts

Been a Dodge/Cummins guy for almost 20 years now; until I bought this '16 Chevy. Like the truck a lot; but it's not near the truck my '04.5 Dodge/Cummins was. Just saying..............as this little truck does everything I axe it to.

Question is this...................prior to buying this truck, I thought all GM pickups were "torsion" front suspension. I know that the 2500 are still torsion.....................but the 1500's.................when did they change, or did they???

Yes they changed. Sorry I can't tell you when.

2500/3500 still use the bars. They make it easier to adjust ride height for snowplow.

From reading it seems like they changed it to rack and pinion sometime during the last gen (07-13). Maybe it was for 07 or sometimes in the middle. I was surprised, but it doesn't bother me. The way I see it is that it's less maintenance than a hydraulic with a power steering pump. If you take the truck mudding a lot then I can see that being a problem since the big electric motor is down there, but if you don't it's not a huge deal. The truck I had before was a '98 Z71 so I can't tell you about '99-'13 from personal driving, but my '14 seems to have better response. I know it's just another electronic thing to go bad, but everything has their advantages and disadvantages. Also I'm sure you've noticed the ride difference with an IFS front instead of a straight axle. A straight axle is better in my opinion for hard off-road use, but I never had a problem with my '98 even though I went mudding in it a lot. For this '14 since I won't be taking it off-road other than dirt and gravel roads (want to actually take care of this one) I prefer the IFS.
