Muffler Delete question

Well I called the muffler shop yesterday and they said they would be open until 4pm...Got there at 1pm and they closed at Noon...Of course and Oh well.. Recorded some sound bites and it does not sound as far off as when I am cruising next to a wall... It is almost a very faint vibration/flutter sound but it is definitely 90% better than the stock sound. I will eventually get it diagnosed... Happy New Year everyone!

Took some vids. Yes, yes, I REALLY suck at this. Sorry.

 

Couple of notes, truck was COLD. I didn't wait for it to warm up. In the startup and rev vids, you can hear a little bit of a rattle. I think this comes from the flapper, and it it does do this when the exhaust is cold. 99.9% of this goes away in a couple of minutes. It certainly has less "ping/slap" noise than the factory setup I'll tell you that. When it's warm, all extra noises go away and it gets a tad bit deeper in tone. Not enough that anyone unfamiliar would notice, but it's there.

 

Wind noise in the vids...what can I say? Sorry. Running solo here and I got what I could. Just watch the first few seconds and imagine the rest.

 

Again for reference, '14 DC 4wd 6.2L. Bakerman style muffler delete. Resonator moved to original muffler position, flapper installed immediately after resonator, eBay Y-Pipe welded to flapper, duals over the axle and out the back.

Mine sounds towards the end of the exhaust as well... I don't know if it is traveling down from the flapper or something else. Hopefully find something tomorrow morning.

Any news? I will say that the sound on mine seems to be much better after driving it more. I won't say it's completely gone, seems to be certain rpm ranges and certain acceleration levels. It mostly only noticeable when the sound echos off something driving by (building, fence, car etc) after look closer at the work it looks like they put in 2.75" pipe or maybe even 2.5". Should it be 3"? Could that be causing certain noise?

Nothing yet.. Muffler shop is closed until tomorrow due to holiday. Mine has reduced in sound as well with driving.. I think before I take it back I will drive it for a week or so and then see what happens. I am satisfied with the sounds coming out versus what it was with Oem. I did notice when I listened in Park and had my son give it gas at different rpms that I did not hear the flutter sound that I heard reverberating off the walls while driving by.

after driving to work after the holiday i definitely noticed the sound again so I just got off the phone with the shop that did it the work and described the sound, and they think that there could be an exhaust leak. They used all stainless piping with the stock size diameter pipe as well. Taking in back in tomorrow to hopefully get it fixed. It still sounds great on start up, idle, under gas with the windows up.

I just got back from my shop... I had two leaks.. One right at the location near the flapper and the other closer to the back near the tips..The owner stated that the leak near the flapper would have been more audible for sure. Definitely sounds cleaner.. Also figured out some of the sound when next too a wall is just the engine standard tick as well. I forgot to mention I have an Airraid MIT on the 6.2L and the engine area of the truck also emits it own growl in addition to the exhaust. Happy with the change still and again glad I did not get rid of the flapper.

Sounds like good news! So the leaks fixed it?! I also have the air raid MIT but on the 5.3, i feel like you can't notice it as much after the exhaust change. Hope my shop can fix it and ill be very happy with it

I agree definitely don't hear as much of the MIT as I used too.... But I was able to have my son stand near one of the walls I have driven by.. He did not hear anything strange from the exhaust but he could just slightly hear the separate sound of the engine mixing with the exhaust notes...

 

I had the muffler shop owner Rev it a few times and could not hear anything from an exhaust standpoint that I felt was off. I did ask him about replacing the resonator with something else for deeper sound (not that it isn't deep just asking) .. He was not quite sure what he would recommend that he thought would work... He led me to be the resonator is fiberglass filled and is designed to knock out higher pitch noises and let the lower rumble through. He did not seem to think a pass through muffler (which he sold) would provide much in deeping the tone additionally but most likelihood would increase the loudness of it which I am not needing at this point in time.

Hmm... My shop guy showed me the weep holes and said they were supposed to be there so it could drain out as designed. Sorry if it doesn't fix it.

    • I really wanted to go to the Fox 2.5's But they were like ~$1,500 vs ~$425 for the Bilsteins. And my research on FOX shocks was that they do not have a great reputation for longevity. I am sure they the FOX's are fantastic, but I know from experience the Bilsteins are rock solid for at least 150k miles. 
    • Conditions for Meeting a Cold Start   The ignition voltage is between 10 and 15 V. The barometric pressure (BARO) is more than 75 kPa. The engine coolant temperature (ECT) at start-up is less than 42°C (108°F). The intake air temperature (IAT) is between 2–32°C (36–90°F). The engine is OFF for greater than 6 hours or the following conditions must be met: The start-up IAT minus start-up ECT are within 12°C (22°F). The start-up ECT minus start-up IAT are within 50°C (90°F). Fuel level is between 25 and 75 %.   Circuit/System Verification Verify that all I/M System Status indicators report YES, and that no I/M Test DTCs are present.If any I/M Test DTCs are set Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle. If no I/M Test DTCs are set All OK. Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System Set Procedure   Warning: Refer to Road Test Warning. Note: Do NOT touch the accelerator pedal until told to do so. A change in TP Sensor angle or an increase in engine speed may invalidate this portion of the test.   Note: An I/M Test DTC will not be stored or erased from the ECU except at the end of trip processing, which occurs 5 s after ignition OFF.   Ensure that the vehicle meets the conditions for a cold start listed above. If the EVAP I/M System Status indicator displays NO, perform the EVAP Service bay test if applicable. Turn OFF all of the accessories; HVAC system, other electrical loads, including aftermarket/add-on equipment, etc., and open the hood.   Set the vehicle parking brake and ensure the vehicle is in park for automatic transmission or neutral for manual transmission.   Start and idle the engine for 2 min.   Close the hood, release the parking brake and Accelerate at part throttle to 72–80 km/h (45–50 mph) with this speed maintained until the engine reaches operating temperature, 8–10 min.   Continue operation under these conditions for an additional 6 min.   Accelerate at part throttle to 90 km/h (55 mph) with this speed maintained for 2 min.   Release the accelerator pedal for at least 10 s. This will allow the vehicle to enter the decel fuel cut off.   Safely stop the vehicle, with the engine in drive for automatic or neutral with the clutch pedal depressed and parking brake applied for manual. Allow the vehicle to idle for 2 min.   Shift the vehicle to park for automatic and neutral for manual. Turn OFF the ignition and exit the vehicle. Do NOT disturb the vehicle for 45 min.   Observe the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System Status with a scan tool. All of the I/M System Status indicators should display YES.   If the EVAP I/M System Status indicator displays NO, turn OFF the ignition, ensure that the vehicle meets the conditions for a cold start, and repeat steps 6-11 three more times, or until the EVAP I/M System Status indicator transitions to YES. If the indicator continues to display NO, refer to the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System DTC Table to identify the DTCs that did not run.   If any of the I/M System Status indicators display NO, refer to the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) System DTC Table for the indicator which did not display YES. The I/M System DTC Table identifies the DTCs associated with each I/M System Status Indicator.   Observe the I/M Test DTC information with a scan tool. Verify there are no I/M Test DTCs present. If an I/M Test DTC is set, diagnose the DTC using the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle and refer to Inspection/Maintenance System Check.   Observe the engine DTC information with a scan tool. Verify no DTCs are present. If a DTC is set, diagnose using the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle. After repairs, perform the Inspection/Maintenance Complete System Set Procedure to verify no further DTCs are set.       Looks like one procedure to me.  Repeated as necessary.
    • My 2020 AT4 6.2 has had the valve spring issue addressed at ~200 miles, front cover/pump replaced at 18k, water pump at 34k and idler pully at 65k.  I would agree with ditching by 100k unless you elect to go with upgraded hardware...say built 10l80 and an lt4 or l8p swap.
