Thumb Drives & Memory Sticks

Fiddling around the other day w/ the truck & I didn't like the idea of using a typical memory stick. One wouldn't fit in the glovebox & I'm sure something would happen if I used 1 in the seat console,

Then I realized I had a couple of "thumbdrives". My brother said @ the time that I bought them, you'll lose those pretty quickly.

It's pretty much is the size of a thumbnail & doen't stick out more than 3/16" from the USB socket.

I have over 2,000 songs on it, around 8 Gb. This is over the supposed "limit" as stated in the owner's manual. Not sure how many, if any are inaccessible. I know in the past the stereo in my 2011 wouldn't access/store/buffer 32 Gb of music.

I haven't really surfed/browsed around the menu to see for sure.

does the radio do any kind of cataloging with the songs? or is it all just random?

That was how my 2011 2500HD was. I haven't played around w/ the USB function much. Right now it's just playing random songs across artists.

Go to the "Browse" function & start fiddling LOL You can select artist, songs or albums. If you go to "artist", you can select "all songs" or "albums". If you select "all songs", it will play all that artist's songs in alphabetical order. If you select an album, it will play the entire album. You can pick genres or a playlist too. No idea how either of those functions work.

I checked the 1st & last artists (A to X) on the thumbdrive & their songs were accessible. Not sure how many files would actually exceed the playback. I know I tried using a 32 Gb memory stick w/ my 2011. It was pretty much full, so I can't tell you exactly how many songs were on it. I do recall that any artists "past" Supertramp weren't accessible.

Has anyone had any luck using a portable hard drive in place of a usb flash drive? I tried hooking up a western digital mypassport drive and the truck didn't recognize it. would i have to reformat it to fat32 or whatever?

Edit: Did a search and found that it does indeed have to be formatted to Fat32

I think there is something in the owners manual about hard drives not being a usable storage device. I already had to get a portable "fixed" last year when it slipped off the couch I was sitting on so it's not something I'd be taking out of the house.

I had found this after I had posted my question
