Spark Plug Wires - difference between 07-09 & 10-14??

Just picked up a 2011 escalade premium a couple months ago and I've been checking off maintenence items to have my own baseline of when stuff was done - fluids (tranny, diff, xfer case, etc), filters, belts, etc...

Next on my list is the plugs and wires. I found a smoking deal on delco iridium plugs, but I'm having a few issues with wires.

I found the below over on tahoeyukonforum, and after reading around, this seems to be pretty accurate (see below)

I was looking at the Taylor wires, however it appears that model years 2007-2009 have different wires than the 2010+. Does this make any sense? Specifically Taylor 84044. It comes up as fitting the earlier models, but not the later models. Anyone know for sure if this is the case? something about round vs square wire ends?

There's one thing that needs to be mentioned here and, that is, that 90% of the wires out there are complete rubbish and, for the record, MSD falls into that category.

Same can be said about Accel wires as well as numerous brands that all use junk core wire that is not shielded properly for one and, uses a cheap arse boots and ends.

I have tested four types of wires and every one but two had failed to shield RMI and from crossfire induction. Those were MSD Supers, Accels, Moroso's Ultra 40s and Napa Belden Blues. I had issues with all and, those issues were mis and crossfires.

MSDs gave me an open circuit condition and intermittent fault conditions in addition to misfire and crossfire condition.

MSD and almost everyone out there buys the wire from one manufacturer. They rave about the low ohm spec but, there's an issue- that low ohm wire is not intended nor was it ever intended to be used on an EFI application period. In using those, it creates a real issue with radiation into the EFI components and wiring harness all the way to the PCM and can fry or damage the chips in the PCM. Despite claiming to have superior shielding, I found misfires a plenty.

One of the problems is the wires that are being shoved into parts stores with the S&M pitch of super low ohms are the "in thing" and "you'll get more HP"- that is complete BS and nothing but pure S&M racket to get the unknowing consumer to buy their products. The fact was, when we dyno'd some engines recently with MSD wires, we saw a loss in HP vs. when using Magnecor and Taylors, we saw an increase in HP due to no loss.

Now, not to misunderstand this, it's not that the latter wires were contributing to more HP- they weren't but, they were allowing the FULL potential of what the engine was capable of go through whereas, MSDs were not efficient and power was lost as a result.

I have run two sets of MSD, top of the line Super-8.5s and, in both tests, they crapped out, had issues with EMI shielding (which f-s up the PCM and EFI system due to EMI radiation) had issues with inferior crimping, poor mechanical design on the metal ends and huge, heat storing molded boots that entraps heat at the plug thus causing the plug to run hotter than was designed. It also makes for a pain in the arse to remove those boots as well due to the cheaper silicone in the boot mixed with a polymer / rubber material.

The boot is perforated / pressed in such a way that it weakens the metal thus allowing it to distort or, in my case, bend outward thus opening up and losing contact due to sloppy fit.

I had noted no continuity on one wire 100% and, when opening it up, found the spiral core to be broken three - four inches above the top of the boot line. I also noted three more MSD wires that were intermittent in continuity thus bending or vibrating conditions would generate a fault. This adds up to a 50% failure rate.

In all cases, I personally avoid MSD wires like the plague. I would rather use piano wire than their stuff. They used to make some good stuff but, over the years, they have had some quality issues across the board- not just their plug wires. Same can be seen with their Dashhawk POS that they were selling and now no longer support. (According to the MSD forum)

In all cases, the super low ohm wires are to be avoided like the plague on EFI vehicles. The original intent was to be used on NON-EFI applications such as race engines where, there's no computer.

It is my personal opinion based on use and test that Magnecor wires, hands down, are the best wire that you can get that will outlast any plug wire on the market today and give superior resistance over it's lifespan, coupled with 100% of the highest grade silicon for the insulator as well as exterior of the cable. They make their own wire for starters and, all the materials are top quality. Even when using the standard, race-car wiring look, I have yet to experience a mis or cross fire condition under high load conditions such as towing.

The other company that also makes their own wires and has a great boot design is Taylor wire company. Their ends are great, allow heat to dissipate and, are easy on/off.

I would not use their low ohm wire but, their mid resistance wire and, most likely, an 8mm wire set would suffice.

Square (MELCO Mitsubishi) vs. Round (Delphi) has to do with the ignition coils. One coil uses a longer wire than the other.

 

Spark plug lists a 12600872 (41-110 Delco #). I'm only showing one wire set for a 2011 Escalade, 19351570 (748UU Delco #).

Personally, I'd stick with OE Delco wires. They're relatively cheap and you know they'll work just fine.

For some reason, (beginning in 2010,) GM decided to fit these engines with "straight" plug-end boots, rather than the 90 degree model.

 

Trying to picture this in my head. If everything else remained the same, the later wires would have to be longer to gracefully arc down to the plug terminal.

Usually there's a number on the coil packs that you use when looking up plug wires to find the correct ones.

Thanks for the info. Got an education. Since the Melco (Mitsubishi Electric) coils hang farther away from the engine, a 90 degree boot isn't as necessary on the plug end. Also, the 748UU wires are close to 1.5 inches longer. Wires for my '08 (Delphi coils) would be too short for the original poster.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
