A Couple of 2017 Silverado Questions

Recommended Posts

I've only had my 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4x4 a few days and have been going through the manuals to learn the many tech/infotainment features. So far, I can't find an answer to the 2 questions below.

1. First of all before anyone bashes me with "don't text while driving", I never text on my phone when driving, but it would be nice to use voice for texting if necessary. Can you send texts via voice command and can you respond to received texts via voice. If so, how?

2. I have an Androud phone paired via bluetooth. In the DIC when you select Phone from the menu and then tab to the right you see 3 options....."Recent Calls", "Contacts" and "Favorites". The Favorites is always grayed out, even though I have several favorites setup in my phone. Should the phone favorites show up in the Favorites in the DIC? If so, how do I get tit to show them? The contacts in my phone do show up when I select Contacts in the DIC.

thanks for the help

I believe the favorites in the DIC is separate from the "favorites" in your phone. For instance, you'd scroll through your contacts on the system in your truck and set said contacts as favorites in that system.

With my iphone, I have to have the phone plugged into a USB port for the Apple Carplay to work for the voice texts. I assume the Android Auto may be the same.

It took me a while to figure out android auto.

Plug your phone in via USB to use android auto. Click the projection icon on the stereo.

Hold the voice button on the steering wheel for 4 sec when in android auto and you can voice text and anything else on your phone.

It allows almost anything google... so "message "so and so" on Whatapp" or "Message so and so" "call billy bob mobile" "Navigate to closest strip club"

then follow the directions given by your stereo.

Can you still text hands free with Siri and the steering wheel call button? I've got a 2015 is why I'm asking if it's still there or not.

You do not need to be connected via USB or in Android Auto for voice text to work. You can be connected via Bluetooth and do not need AA at all.

Pushing the voice command button on the steering wheel will cause the MyLink software to prompt for a command. Asking to send a text will use the MyLink system to send via your phone.

Holding the voice command button will activate the Google app on your phone. Your truck is only the microphone in this case. Commands are going straight to your phone and the Google app is processing them. Send text is a command it recognizes, along with call, search, and others.

If you are connected via BT and a text comes in, you'll see an option to read on the DIC. Push the check/selection button and the truck will read it to you.

I have my Android connected via bluetooth and when I press the voice command button on the steering wheel it asks me to say a command. I've responded "Send Text", "Text", Send a Text", "Text Message", and "Send a Text Message". It then asks me for the contact or phone number I want to CALL. I respond with a contact name and the system calls them instead of texting. I've tried everything I can think of and just cannot get it to accept a text command.

Using MyLink as you are now, do you see command options on the radio display or DIC? Did you try "Send Message"?

Try holding down the voice command button. Your phone may ask which app you want to process the action. Select Google. The app should then process your voice commands when you long press. I prefer this over the MyLink command processing which you are getting now.

The Google app is more forgiving. You can say "Send message" and it will prompt for recipient, or can say "send [text] message to John Doe". All other voice commands to your phone are supported using this method, where they may not be via MyLink.

Did some testing today. You are right, MyLink does not support voice texting. Only phone, nav, and radio commands. It will read incoming text, just not send.
