Warranty service/Dealer question

I took my truck in to get a message checked and ended up need a part. My truck has been at the shop a week now and it's fixed. I pick it up tomorrow afternoon.

My questions are:

They have driven my truck almost 200 miles in testing before fix and then after, can I ask for gas?

I am required to bring the loaner back with how much gas was in it when I got it. Does that go both ways?

Sounds like a reasonable request to make

They called back asking about the loaner and I brought it up. The lady told me that typically they do not do that but she will speak with my service person to see if they could put $15 in it.

I told her that I have only driven the truck 390 miles since I purchased it and they have driven it about 200. I too think it's reasonable.

Plus they dinged my door and it needs touch up paint. Not happy at all about that.

200 miles in a week to fix a part? Seems a bit odd... What was the problem/part replaced? Seems like if you have to return the truck with the tank to where it was at, that they should do the same. And the door ding...ugh

I used to work as a detailer in a service department of a dealership, and I know that sometimes our techs would drive some of the service vehicles outside of work if it was one that was requiring extensive work or waited a long time for parts.

Not excusing the actions, as I believe it to be wrong as well, but just stating that it happened at the dealership I was working at. Perhaps they drove it home or to run errands aside from just test drives. Or maybe they felt they needed to do extensive test drives to test the new part (unaware what the service being done to your truck is).

That is why I have the myGMC / OnStar app. If i had to drop my truck off at the dealership (or any shop), i'd record the mileage (would understand if they had to do some test driving, but not excessive mileage) and I would check on my app where my vehicle was during the day and after the dealership closed for the day. They shouldnt be driving customers vehicles for personal errands or pleasure.

They were replacing some electrical components in the steering system. They explained it as an electric gear.

This is how I have been keeping up with the mileage. I haven't been able to check location through the day as much due to work.

No way they should have put 200 miles on it for electrical steering stuff. Total BS that they had to put 200 miles on it, even if you have major transmission problems the don't put those kind of miles on it, hell you can't even get them to go around the block with it before they tell you "operating as normal". They must have been using your truck for something else other than just test driving it for the fix. I would totally complain but that isn't really going to do anything for you, so at least I would recommend going to a different dealer for future work. That's my opinion anyways.

Just another reason why I have a dash cam installed... Can see where they take the vehicle and such.

I don't think it's unreasonable to request they put some gas in. They ask you do return the loaner vehicle with the same amount of fuel.

I want to install a dash cam in my truck and car

This would not be acceptable to me and I would insist on a good explanation. I doubt they will have one. If they don't, I would ask for compensation and write a letter of complaint to GM.

I'm definitely questioning them about it.

What dash cam do you recommend?

It's a good piece of mind; hopefully you never need to use it though.

One of the Service advisors at a local GM Dealership was telling me he used to work at another Dealership and a customer brought in his truck for servicing. When the customer played back his dash cam later on, he heard the technician rambling about how the customer was a liar, how he probably caused the issue in his truck, etc. So even if you don't see anything, you may hear something interesting!

I got a Blackvue. Great quality day and night and can be purchased with a front and rear camera or just a front camera. You can also wire it in or just plug into your cigarette lighter. Mine is in my cigarette lighter that turns on and off with the truck and I concealed all the wiring. Looks clean. If you hardwire it in, if someone bumps your truck or walks in front of it, it will turn on and start recording.
