fixing head gaskets or engine swap?

hey guys i got an 07 sierra 1500 4x4 z91 with only 130000km on it..

 

anyways the saturday morning i started it up and thick white smoke coming out the exhaust.. drove it around 10 minutes n it still blowing smoke like crazy even after warming up.

 

so i brought it to a mechanic shop and i was informed that i blew a headgasket and coolant mixed in with my oil and there was tons of coolant in the engine.

 

he said that had i brought it in sooner they may have been able to fix it but he wouldnt feel good about fixing the gaskets at this point as he says the motor is probably badly damaged as it is.

 

he recommended a motor swap. was quoted 3600 for a used one with 180000km on it with 6 mth warranty..

 

or he said he could do the gaskets for like 2000$ but he said id probably be kickin myself later..

 

anyways all he did was change my oil im thinking of trying somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.. what do you guys think? the truck runs fine and the engine has yet to overheat. i feel like 3600 to swap my motor for a more used one is a kick to the nads.. sorry for the rant lol thanks for any advice!!

Get a new crate engine check out Pace Performance and others no way I would dump big dollars into a high mileage engine when a remanufactured engine unit is available for just a bit more.

Interesting that after an oil change you are running just fine - if you indeed blew a gasket, I would think that the leak would continue and you would be putting out grey smoke and overheating. I have replaced head gaskets with no problems - I also did not drive it much after the problem started I also kept putting water in the system to keep it cool. I have also replaced the engine with a crate one from GM. As I recall the head gasket was around 2k and the crate engine was around 3500 - this was over 20yrs ago now. I would not go with a high mileage used engine when GM has crate engines with warranty for the same price. I would also have someone else diagnose your blown head gasket.

its still putting out grey smoke but not overheating.. thanks for the advice guys im for sure gonna get a 2nd opinion tgis week

i have the 5.3L if that helps.. also these are Canadian prices if that matters.. not sure which engine i need on that pace performance site

If you want a direct oem replacement why not just get a used engine with relatively low mileage? Will be a lot cheaper than a crate engine even with basic proactive maintenance before installing it.

Replace with a reman engine.

 

Wife's 01 Suburban have yo the ghost after son kept driving it with low oil pressure. I was getting ready to do a full gasket replacement on it any way as after 300k it was leaking and eating oil everywhere.

 

I opted for a reman from Dahmer Powertrain. It was cheaper than a gm crate and came with 3yr/100 warranty. Came with upgraded oil pump.

 

Took about 12 hours out and 10 hours in. Put the kid to work as a helper. Relatively easy for an engine pull. Left the ac system and power steering system intact and lifted motor up and out with them still in the vehicle.
