Adding Factory Cruise Control

I'm reaching out to you Silverado/Sierra guys to see if anyone has ever had this done. I recently purchased a 2017 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab WT.

 

Since the trucks are essentially the same besides the size, has anyone successfully added 'Factory OEM' cruise control to their 2014-2017 WT truck?

 

I'm talking about swapping out steering wheels, since the WTs without the 'convenience' package come with a standard steering wheel without any controls/buttons.

 

 

My idea is to buy a GM OEM steering wheel with cruise control buttons/controls on the steering wheel, installing this new steering wheel in my truck, than flashing/reprogramming whatever it takes to add cruise control to my truck.

 

I'll go aftermarket if I really have to, but cruise control is a MUST HAVE for me. I rushed my purchase and assumed the truck had cruise control when looking at the blinker switch (Set/Clr) but later found out that's to toggle things on the speedometer dash.

 

I got a really good deal on this truck and I really don't want to get rid of it. I can't find a better deal out there for what I paid for this truck, but I really want my cruise control!

 

I'm hoping someone that's worked/or is working the in GM/Chevy Service Department on here can chime in if possible to tell me if this is achievable.

I might be wrong, but I think all 2014+ K2XXs have factory cruise control.

You are correct.

 

But on low trims on the Colorado/Canyon twins it is not.

The bottom trims it is not available and on the next level it is optional.

I would simply go aftermarket and skip the switching out of the steering wheel. Controls on the steering wheel are nice but there is nothing wrong with the buttons on your turn signal lever. That is where you expected to find them!

I'm trying to avoid the after market route for now. I'd rather avoid cutting and splicing wires in my steering column. But I'll go that route if there's no absolute way of getting it factory.

 

If anyone has gone the steering wheel swap for cruise control method successfully, or if any dealership service techs have done this before, please let me know.

Please keep us informed. I read that aftermarket cruise controls are mostly plug and play with one wire needing to be cut and spliced. I envision steering wheel replacement as being much more invasive/difficult but perhaps this is not the case!

Could you explain how it would cost a lot in parts? Changing something like this just oblivious to me.

 

Here's the steering wheel I'm looking to get to replace my standard steering wheel with:

Granted this part is a 2016 and my truck is a 2017. Not sure if that would make a difference, but there's not a lot of parts out for 2017s. Couldn't they just swap it to this steering wheel and flash the BCM? I don't know what all it entails to just add cruise control.

 

 

Donstar, I'll keep this thread updated. I keep getting no from different sources, but I also got a lot of 'NOs' when I wanted to get Keyless entry/Remote start for my base model WT. GM Care said it can't be done, parts guy at a few dealerships said it couldn't be done, and then I walked over to the GM Service guys and they said "yeah, we can do that, just order the fobs or buy the kit from us"

 

As far as the aftermarket, this is what I'd be buying:

It doesn't intimidate me, but I just don't want to be cutting/splicing wires in my steering column in my brand new truck. I'm sure it'll work pretty good, but I also don't want to void my electronics warranty if I don't have it.

I hope r3gul8r figured out how to put factory cruise. I also bought a WT that did not come with Keyless and cruise. I have seen on the Chevy website that with WT you can get a cruise control and keyless entry. But the website was not clear to me that I had to buy the package with the truck not after. Anyways parts guys are telling me the same thing as they told r3gul8r.

 

So, I hope r3gul8r can tell me a little more about the outcome of his cruise control work. Did you succeed on putting the OEM? What parts did you get? Any dealer programming?  My WT is a 2020 Silverado.

 

I also have similar questions about the Keyless entry.

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
