Exhaust question

Good afternoon, I've got an 09 gmc 1500 ext cab with the 5.3, looking to put a flowmaster 10 on with a single tailpipe, my question is does pipe diameter after the muffler do anything? Trying to decide between 3inch or 4inch pipe. Looking for a deep mellow roar kind of sound to it. Not going to change anything in front of the muffler. Also, anybody know if the AFM sounds different or anything with louder exhaust?

Going to a much larger diameter on a naturally aspirated engine won't give you any benefits except for sound. You will however lose some low end power because you will slow down there velocity. A common myth is people say you lose back pressure and that these engines need a little back pressure. That's totally untrue.. You don't want any back pressure you want velocity. To big of a pipe and the exhaust doesn't have enough velocity to exit correctly and you lose the scavenging effect from the exhaust pulses. I noticed a small loss down I'm the low rpms in my 2005 5.3 when I installed a " free- flowing" Magna-flow muffler and larger 3" pipe. Just a little info to think about.
