Towing issues yesterday...?

Set off for Tucson yesterday with the funny car and got just over the Grapevine and stopped at the rest stop to grab a quick bite.

After 20 minutes or so, my 2007.5 Duramax would crank but not fire. it was 96 degrees out side and we were able to prime the pump and fire the motor but were concerned about it re-starting after shutting it off so rather than continue on to Palm Springs and then AZ where it would have been even hotter, we decided to play it safe, considered ourselves lucky we avoided a $1700 towing bill for both truck & trailer (after being on the phone with AAA for over an hour) and just returned home, canceling our entire weekend.

Of course after running non stop for almost 6 hours and returning to weather that was 20 degrees cooler, it started several times perfectly without issue.

My mechanic says the cartridge will develop seal leaks and that I should change that unit which comes with a new filter as well.

He also mentioned lift pumps as an option and wondered what everyone's thoughts on those were.

I cannot have this happen again while towing long distance and obviously the only way to know if these solutions correct the problem would be to tow again in hot weather...not really a comfortable choice.

Any suggestions guys...?

What cartridge is he talking about? Sounds like the fuel got too hot somehow. How does the fuel cooler look (small radiator in front of the fuel tank area)?

Lift pumps could be the way to go...

Went with the Kennedy twin pump deluxe kit since my mechanic had a similar year truck and installed that set-up his and it's easier to work with a product you're familiar with.

I also spoke with John Kennedy personally and may go with his custom tune as well, he sounds like a pretty sharp guy.
