All Terrain vs. Mud Tire

I moved away from the Good Year SRA tires with less than 10K miles on my truck. I've been running Nitto Terra Grappler A/T for the last 10K. I get more rock chips from the Terra Grapplers which I expected, but more than I expected. Thinking of going to a Mud Terrain because grooving in tire is more open than an A/T. Anyone else go to a M/T for this reason?

I totally get what you're saying, but on the rare occasion you come across a big rock that will stick in the wider tread of a MT tire, you'll really be crying when that baby comes loose. Also consider if you care or not about the more road noise a MT tire will have.

Mud flaps and running boards may just be your best answer if you are concerned about rock chips.

But if you do go with the MT tire, check out the Cooper Sst pro. Good reviews on road noise, wear, and a little cheaper, while still being quality.

I love my duratracs. They throw rocks periodically but not as bad as the bfg and general at's ive had.

I run BFG KO2's on mine. No need or desire to run MT tires. All of my vehicles have to do a couple of miles of gravel roads to the nearest hard road any time they leave the driveway. Sure, the KO2's throw a lot more rocks than a tamer tire, but that is why I use good mudflaps and stainless running boards. Takes care of all rock issues. 2.5 years on this pickup and hardly a rock chip on the body. And the KO2's do a fantastic job cutting ruts in the mud when these hilly gravel roads go to hell during spring melt with the associated throwing rooster tails of mud and rock behind me, and off the road on hilly, soft farm ground and pasture areas.

+ 1 for the Duratrac's. I love them! And they are quiet.
