AC blowing hot, Vacuum Pump out, Temperature gauge off

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2014 Silverado V6 LS. Last week my AC went out for the second time. Truck has 44K miles so is out of warranty. The first time they replaced the defective hose issue I have read about. I have not diagnosed the latest problem yet but was planning on doing it this week. Then today, I was running errands and I heard a loud squeal and seconds later I had no assisted braking and had to really push down to stop. When I got home I looked in the engine and saw the belt had snapped. I purchased and installed a new one and fired up the truck. The squealing was loud and when I looked the vacuum pump was frozen and the belt was just spinning on it. I also noticed 3 days ago that the electronic thermostat number was stuck at 51 degrees most of the day even though we are in the mid 80's in Dallas. Either this truck is having a really bad week or there is a connection. Any ideas?

Also, For the life of me, the belt for the vacuum is no where on linepn# 12643517. What is up with that?

Shouldn't be a vacuum pump on a gas engine (unless it's a Volkswagen). Can you take a pic so we can see what you mean?

When you break the belt, the water pump also doesn't turn, along with the power steering, A/C compressor, & alternator. You're extremely lucky you didn't melt the engine down driving it home like that. Hopefully it wasn't very far - like under 2 miles with NO hills. Could have wiped out the head gaskets if she got really cooking - that would've happened long before it killed the battery.

When did that start? So they are putting vacuum pumps on these things now? WTF ...

Another fantastic GM brainstorm. God forbid they use systems that worked since the dawn of the automobile, and were RELIABLE ...

Unreal!! :nonod:

My understanding is the VP is needed when the truck drops down to 4 cylinders. Definitely needs one, damn braking was awful for the last 1/2 mi I drove home.

Interesting.

Sounds like yet another unintended consequence of unreasonable government-mandated fuel-mileage / emission requirements. I should've known ...

Ok, just took off the VP and I have metal shards everywhere. Now I am definitely freaking out. Something is really wrong with this Truck and it only has 43K miles.

Oh geesh! Seems to be par for the course today, unfortunately. A few get good ones, a few get lemons, and a few get problem children that spend more time in the shop than on the road.

Looks like that pump grenaded. Wouldn't shock me one bit if GM made them non-rebuildable - meaning you have to replace the entire unit for $100 for a $2.50 part inside.

Gmpartsdirect says it's discontinued??? That wouldn't shock me either .... although I did see the pump available on another site.

This is exactly the sort of thing that makes me HATE GM today. Could've just run a vacuum hose to the booster off the intake manifold like they've done for 100 years prior ... but they have to reinvent the wheel every time, install failure-prone and unnecessary parts (if they just engineered the intake correctly there would be no need for a vac pump!!) that can't even make it to 50k miles. :banghead:
