I've heard some say that often those jumping off bridges and whatnot are dead before they hit the ground as they have heart attacks. Now being that he was an experienced jumper, I wonder how much time he was aware of his fate.

Yes I have heard this too. THey die from shock and asphyxiation or something before they ever touch down.
