I change my oil religiously at 3k mikes, I'll have to check to see what they've been using, pretty sure it's a synthetic..

Would eliminating the AFM via tuning or range plug in help?

Nope, I would be getting off that 3K oil change thing.....Yes, absolutely GM is now fairly confident that the oil itself is the main culprit when if burns off and the residue left behind is the problem.......

Your basically removing the oil at it's absolute best time after a few thousand miles you hit the sweet spot and Wear rates Drop and is maintained for many thousands of miles before finally exhausting additives and significant wearing occurs again. Even though you think it was doing you good it probably compounded the valve train coking exponentially. The other problem GM knew it had a problem on it's hand and now has from what this forum says, "changed over to Fully synthetic" and the next grade of Dexos is about to hit all due to the TURBOS and GDI's now and future!

8K at least on your Dexos 1 Full Synthetic and USE..........BG-GDI PRODUCTS!

Also there is technical SAE paper from Chevron/Ford on this.......SAE 2003-01-3119

1. Good full synthetic oil

2. Good premium oil filter

3. Good additive for these DI engines.(if you plan on keeping your truck for the long run, because that is where you are going to see DI related fuel issues once you approach 70,000+ miles. I'm a fan of the BG products, but do your own research and decide for yourself.
