Vibration Repair #4

Recommended Posts

Just got off the phone with the dealership. I was informed that they are replacing a tire, balancing the tires, and installing cab mount shims to stop my vibration. What does installing a cab mount shim mean?

The body is mounted to the frame with (not sure of the material - maybe Neoprene?) rubber-like mounts. Shiming them means they are inserting a spacer of some sort to change the translation of vibrations between the frame and body.

Not sure if that will work on my truck (though I'd be willing the try it). My vibrations come trough the steering column now.

My vibration is all over... including the steering column. I'm hoping this fixes it but im not sure

Go ask the individuals doing the work on your truck. Have them show you and explain to you why and how they will do this repair. I would try the truck with the tire replacement and balancing prior to going ahead with additional work. My GM products have always been smooth rides but vibrations in other vehicles have always been wheel related! I find it hard to understand how some truck owners are experiencing vibrations that go beyond wheel issues on a new truck! If this issue could be isolated to a particular assembly plant, model of truck or date of manufacture then maybe it would be easier to find a cause!

Has anyone replaced their wheels and tires with aftermarket wheels and new tires and still have shaking? I want to buy some lightweight 18's to swap out when I feel like it. I believe there's something going on ( like the mounts) that makes these trucks exaggerate any vibration that's there..

I had 20s that came with the elevation package and I swapped to 17s wrapped in 34s and I have zero vibration.

Did you have any vibration before swapping the wheels and tires? I really like the looks of the 20" wheels that came stock on my truck but nothing is worth a crappy ride. I'd like to see pics of your truck.. Always wondered if the 17"wheels would look ok with a large tire. Mine are 33.1" and on a 20 they still look small.

Has anyone analyzed a video to determine the frequency of the vibration? The frequency would tell you which driveline component is exciting the movement as the vibration would be equal to or a multiple of the component frequency.

Is there an app for that? Lol in all seriousness I've been trying to figure this out without the dealership. I've installed Bilstein leveling shocks and larger tires along with a tune so I don't want to hear their bull poop about it being what I've done. If I can locate the issue then I will tell them what to fix. You know.. Ya gotta do people's jobs for them quite often.

I think it would be easy enough to analyze the audio via a decent video editing program. Just need to count out the peaks of the thump thump thump sound and convert it to frequency, and then to rpm. If we know the sound frequency along with what gear the person was in and at what engine RPM we could determine exactly what rotating component is exciting the movement. Would also need to know the rear end ratio and which kind of transmission.

Mine had the vibration from day one at 74 mph and took it back 3 times and they balanced and balanced, replaced a tire, replaced drive shaft so I said hell with it.Went there two weeks ago for the seat belt recall and when I walked in he said hey we have a new balance machine and hired a tech to just do balancing can we try to balance your tires?Yes go ahead and they did.I left the dealer jumped on interstate and guess what?No vibration!!!!Ran it at all speeds and rode nice just like wife's caddy. So good luck hang in there I think they had a bad machine before.

I had vibration at 72-78 mph and it got better when I rotated tires the first time and then got worse when I did it the next time, meaning that one of the tires was out of balance and unnoticed it more when that wheel was on the front.

17s and 34s
