iPhone connected to car play works great. Apple nav is better than any nav system I've used. Always up to date.

The issue with a phone based nav is that it relies on a cell signal. For my hunting trips and trips through sparsely populated areas of the west, this doesn't work. But for most of the time when I'm in Socal, it works fine. A Garmin or similar self-contained database GPS is necessary for my boonie trips. GM Nav is about as unfriendly to use as I could imagine. I try to use mine occasionally, but find it incredibly frustrating and more often than not, end up using my phone. I'm not using any GPS assistance enough to warrant spending any more money on add-on systems, etc...maybe once-twice a month. If I did spend money, it would be for a new Garmin. But even that's a solution looking for a problem. Where's everyone going that they need GPS all the time? Short memories? No prep before driving somewhere? Most of the time I go somewhere new in the LA area, I've looked on a map app already, put it to memory, and don't even need GPS assistance.

We're fine with the built in GPS, but we will use the phones when the maps don't contain a destination we're looking for. On a side note, we just bought a 15 Terrain SLT and the GPS in that is awful, not from a maps perspective, from a UI perspective, the interface sucks and the map view you look at is terrible.
