GMT 900 Front Differential Removal

Am in the process of dropping the front differential for evaluation and/or repair.

Removed the two retaining straps from the yoke, but was unable to disengage the front u-joint.

Assuming that rust is the culprit, but wanted to make sure I didn't need to loosen the rubber boot on the transfer case end of the front driveshaft?

Please, advise.

Thanks a million for your help!

Just the straps they can be stubborn. It's a slip yoke going into case. Just like the one on the transmission. Take straps off and pop her out.

Yeah, they can stick - always do up here.

Just make sure you don't send the caps and all the needle bearings flying when you pry or tap it off of there. That makes for a bad day. Make sure both caps are free of the yoke before moving the driveshaft, so it all comes off together.

Thanks for the replies. I'll leave the rear boot alone.

Sounds like a job for my under-powered air hammer, equipped with a smoothing hammer bit.

That will allow me to apply a little vibration with one hand, while holding on to the caps with the other.

Thanks, again.
