What year Tahoe??? 2 wheel, 4 wheel drive? Are you referring to an auto or stick trans??? Need a story behind this not going in to low gear. Does it engage in in other gear positions???

Put it into second or third or fourth and see if it will move. The forward apply band on one of my vans busted and would not move with the selector in 1st, but in second it would grudgingly go and then shift to second and stay there.

I don't think you need to worry about it man, your rig is not supposed to "shit" in any gear.

As for the actual problem that your experiencing, there is not a lot you can do. Automatic or manual >>> check the fluid level, and then check your shift linkage. If one of those is not the problem, then you need a mechanic. (Preferably an honest one)

Oh, one other thing. Assuming the fluid and linage are OK, and its a manual trans, try this:

With the engine off, try putting it into reverse, and then into first. If that doesn't work, try rolling the vehicle a few inches forward or backwards and try to put it into first gear again. Beyond that, I don't think there are any other universal transmission tips.

There may be a specific problem with your exact model of transmission, but you are the only one that knows what type of transmission you have, so all I can offer is generic tips about transmissions in general.
