(SOLVED - camshaft being replaced) 2015 Sierra 6.2L Engine "Knocking"

(EDIT 1/12/2018) Finally heard back from the dealer, everything in the engine is fine except for the camshaft missing material on one of the lobes. Being replaced/repaired under warranty. (END EDIT)

Engine started knocking (best I can describe it) today on the way home. Can't see anything obvious external to the engine. Has premium fuel (always) and a fairly fresh oil change. Truck is warmed up, not cold. Only 57,642 miles. Yes I need to clean the engine bay.... :uhoh:

Maybe lifter issue? Time for (yet another) dealership appointment?

Lol judging by all the posts in other threads about engine noise I wouldn't be surprised

Trust me though. A lot of that noise in other threads are just the injectors pulsating at 11k PSI. However there are some legitimate sounds that these engines shouldn't be making and yours is one of them. It's obviously a knock and not a tick.

GDI engines do make a lot of noise. When you pull up next to a new Honda Accord at a red light, roll down your window and listen to how loud that engine ticks. They tick louder than ours. Same goes with the new Volkswagens.

At the end of the day, I was just being funny regarding the dealer mechs. Unless they have a computer telling them what's wrong then in their eyes, your vehicle is operating normally.

Let us know what the rip off artists told you.

They just called me. They are thinking a stuck lifter/valve is getting smacked by the piston. They "should" have the engine torn down for full diagnosis Wednesday. Based on past experience I probably won't get any updates 'til next week.

For those who may be curious, they finally called me today with what the problem is. The camshaft in the engine has a "physical deformity with one of the lobes." They say they literally found nothing else damaged in the engine. The lobe on the camshaft itself was missing a "significant amount of material" and there's no evidence of the material in the engine or engine oil. Now, I'm not sure how metal bits would just disappear with no evidence left behind whatsoever but whatever. Covered under warranty. Supposedly camshafts are on back order so couple weeks 'til I get my truck back at least. :banghead:

Guaranteed there are metal bits sitting in that block somewhere. If it wasn't under warranty, you can bet your ass they'd find those pieces of metal.

Oh yeah I agree completely. With this and the transmission issues I think I'm going to throw in the towel. Last thing I need is a major break down when warranty is up. Good thing I have plenty of miles before then to look for something else.

Been very disappointed with this truck. I've never had a vehicle, of any brand/make, that needed engine and transmission work before 150k miles before. Hopefully the new gen will fair better, but I'm definitely not considering one until they're at least 3 years into the next generation.

Well, I'm done with this truck and with GM in general. Finally got my truck back around 5:15pm Jan 30. Ran great! Then check engine light came on around 11am Jan 31. Take it back and they say they found mud and water inside a connector that powers some sensors that monitor the camshaft. I didn't have this problem before they took apart everything. Now it magically appears and they want me to pay for it. 500 bucks. Screw that and screw them. They clearly didn't connect it all the way. Another stealership earning the name.
