Heater Performance

About fed up with it. 15 degrees today. Drove to the grocery and it was up to operating temp by the time I got there there. Drove home at operating temp and it was barely blowing warm air out of the vents. I felt the heater hoses both inlet and outlet and they felt about as warm as the air coming out. Also grabbed both radiator hoses and I could keep ny hand on both as long as I wanted. 210 water temp in my lifetime has always caused me to take my hand off of a radiator hose pretty darn quick. Something seems off but I’m not super interested in diagnosing a year and a half old truck.

Picked up a handy dandy infrared thermometer. Tested it against a known good thermometer and it seems to be about 2 degrees off at any temp no big deal.

The radiator hoses/block/heads after a long highway run and some spirited driving never read over 140 degrees. The metal pipes coming out of the heater core read around 100 degrees. Truck temp says 210 on the dash.

Highly unlikely it has a failed thermostat and also a bad sending unit but I’ve seen some weird things before.

I know you’re going to lose some temp from inside to the outside of the components but I can’t see it losing almost 70 degrees from the actual water temperature.

Are these engines reverse cooing water flow ? I think I remember they did that on all of the LS motors.

Coolant is full. -12 here tomorrow, keeping it inside because the interior stays warmer and the water gets up to temp a little faster when I leave it in the garage.

Liquid Molly and almost a full tank of mostly highway driving/running it harder than normal in and if anything the idle seems worse. It's never extra smooth unless it's not warmed up but other times the idle is much worse than normal. Not super interested in an induction service and blowing a ton of chemical through the converters. I know they would probably still be covered under the emissions warranty but I don't really feel like taking the chance.

I really liked this thing when I first got it but it seems after the battery failed it was all downhill after that.

I cleaned my throttle body this morning. It looked pretty good with just a little dirtiness in the bore and a slight amount on the back of the throttle plate. Just had TB cleaner soaked on a micro fiber and light rubbing cleaned it all. A slight film of oil in the intake but no pools or puddles like others. TB cleaning seemed to make 0 difference in the idle.

I am sure the dealer would reply with no codes no problems.

Temps were Negative 21 F on my drive home last Friday night and the heat worked fine.  It doesn't seem to kick out the most heat until it hits operating temp (which makes sense).

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I would presume it would kick out much but when it starts getting up to 180-190 should at least be warm.

Anywho, I got the truck up to operating temp really close to work today and went inside to grab coffee, truck idling for 5-7 minutes went from 210 to about 190 water temp sitting idle after warmed up. Seems a little odd it loses temp. It acts like an older diesel truck cooling system (long warm ups and loses temp idling).
