Heater Performance

Anyone find the very cold weather heater performance in their truck subpar? It got down to -2 here last night. I ran the remote start for 15 minutes and the water temp was around 170 with basically cool air coming from the vents. When the truck got up to 210 it was blowing what I could call medium warm air out. Takes quite a while with the dual climate control and fan both set full high to warm the interior while driving. I also had the thing on recirculate but I understand that's sort of up to the truck if it wants to recirculate the cabin air?

I was in our 2000 Ram plow truck this weekend in the cold and that heater will run you out of the truck (as with every other vehicle I've owned with a heater core in good health). This one rates slightly better than my 2000 Cherokee with a plugged up core but only slightly.

Above 20 degrees it's just fine but drop much below that and I think its performance is subpar. Just checking others thoughts on this.

I’ve never had a problem with mine. It’ll fry me set on high.

It was below zero here yesterday too. I had no issues with getting enough heat out of my 2015. I remote started it and loaded up two young kids before the 10 minute timer shut it off. I was getting warm air well within the 15 minutes you stated, I did not check the engine temp. I park it in a detached, non-heated garage, so it was a little better, though couldn't have been much warmer than parking outside.

Hmm, maybe my expectations are high? It will defrost the windshield but it can't have been much above 32 degrees inside this morning. My commute is about 20 minutes on the way I went today. I didn't feel warm enough to turn it down until I was about 2 minutes away from my parking lot. Left it running while I stopped and grabbed coffee too so it probably had been running for 25 min at that point then another 10min in to the shop.

I mean if you hop in after 10 minutes of warming up, the heater probly isn't blowing hot air yet, but by 20 minutes of running, it should be hot. Every car I have ever owned would blow heat within 20 minutes of idling, even sooner if you are driving (engine under load).

I know with the new "smart" climate settings, I Leave it set on 70 or 72. It will only turn up the fan speed once it can blow air above that temp. I have never timed it to see how long it takes from a cold start, but it comes on before I drive the 3 minutes to daycare.

If you really aren't getting warm air after 20-some minutes of running the engine, there may be something wrong.

0 degrees F this morning for me.  Took longer than normal to warm up, but put out a good amount of heat (like it normally does) once warm.

I mean I have owned lots of vehicles and the only ones that wouldn't blow "Hot" air were two with plugged heater cores. They worked fine in warmer weather but 20 and below it wouldn't get above what I would say was on the low side of "Warm". This one was "warm" by the time I got to work but nowhere near what I would call "Hot" especially with a nice 210 degree water temp and not idling.

I might rig up a thermometer and check the vent output temperature. A few winters ago when it was -25 my Dodge was nice and toasty inside sitting in the driveway idling. I understand the physics of converting cooler air to warm air and that will have a direct effect on output temp but heaters should be more than able to compensate for below 0 temps.

Thanks for weighing in.

Mine heats up well.  It's -20 to -25C here, and inside 8 blocks (from my home to getting onto a major street), truck is already blowing warm, and inside 10 minutes it's hot, 20 minutes I have to turn down the heat or crack the windows.

But maybe it's psychosomatic, as I can watch the temp going up 1C every couple seconds on my Edge Insight.

What are your cooking fans doing when the truck is warming up? Are they running or not?

im having an issue where the tabs will almost always run full speed and the truck takes forever to heat up, especially if i have the heat on before it’s up to 210 deg temp.

Haven't checked yet. If you are driving at less than highway speed in these temps without using remote start it probably takes 15 minutes of city driving to get up to 210 degrees.

In theory, the cooling fans shouldn't effect warm up much if the thermostat is closed keeping water in the block.

I did check vent output temps. I was around 130 at idle fully warmed up with outside temp at 5 degrees. Running the engine at 2200 rpms I could get the vent temp to come up as much as 45-50 degrees. As soon as I let the engine idle again the vent temps started to drop like a rock. I guess there may be insufficient water flow at low of an rpm when temps are this cold out. Bear in mind, these vent temp tests were after a 12 minute 75 mph highway run home so everything was about as warmed up as it could possibly be given the weather.

Also, comparing the face vents to the floor vents it seems the floor vents don't move anywhere near the quantity of air the face vents do. I always keep the heat on the floor in the winter but the last few days I have changing to feet and face to try and speed the warming of the cab process.

I am just confused because I have never had any vehicle (without a plugged heater core) that I have ever though man this heat sucks or it takes forever to heat up in here. Even our older Diesel trucks seemed to blow good heat out. Idling those things would result in a water temp gauge that never got off cold but still put good heat into the cab.

My 2016 crew cab with dual climate will heat up within 10 minutes when the temp is above 30°. If the temp is below 30°, I'll usually run the remote start for 15 minutes and it's heated up fine.

Once my truck is at running temp (210°), I have to lower the heat to below 80° or I get too hot.

I messed around with mine on the way home today at 0 degrees. Had nice hot air at 160 degrees and I was sweating by 200. Took about 10-15 to get to 200. Heated steering wheel definitely helps the sensation of cold by keeping your hands toasty.

I’d take a trip to the dealer

Thanks for the Feedback. Mine is out of basic warranty. Won't be visiting the dealer unless it's a power train related issue (just started the shaky idle about 5000 miles ago). One of the things I loved about the truck in the first 15k miles I owned it was you couldn't tell it was running while idling. Now its usually shaking you when it's at operating temp.

Seems like I am dealing with a flow restriction, the last 2 days it was below 10 degrees I never took the dual controls off HI all day. If I got too warm I just backed the blower down a bit. At 160 on mine you barely get a feel of warmth from the vent air. Doesn't seem to me like an issue with the dual controls, vent temps are identical side to side with the things synced. The passenger blend door is accessible by pulling down the HVAC cover and you can see it is maxed out when the temp is set on full high. Don't really feel like putting a heater core in an almost new truck.

I can still get trade dollars similar to what I paid for it a year ago so it might find it's way back to a used lot. Not sure exactly what I would replace it with though, came from a Ram with more problems than you could count.

In regards to the shaky idle, try running some liquid molly with a tank of 93 octane.

This fixed my rough idle. I also now exclusively run 89 octane and my idle is back to running smooth. I also feel a difference in power.

If that doesn't work, try cleaning the mass air sensor.

If all else fails, get the BG GDI Fuel Induction service done and your engine should feel brand new.

    • Curious, did anyone ever get a fix for the vibration reported here.   I have a 2024 Silverado with 6.6 duramax.   I’m noting the same vibration resonating up through the steering shaft into the steering wheel.    Best way to describe- like someone is tapping on the steering shaft/components and it’s resonating into the steering wheel.    thanks.
    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
