Tire Pressure

I finally got around to seeing if the tires needed more air.  I look at the door and it says 35psi all around for the 265/75 16s on the Z71s.  The pressure in the tires was 40psi.  When I deflated the tires down to 35, they looked like they do not have enough air in them.  What pressure do you all keep in the tires.  As far as I know, it looks like the dealer put 40 in them (but I have seen them not inflate tires to the proper pressure way too many times).  Thanks for the help

I've used 35psi all around since new and they have a lot of life left. They have only been rotated once (bad me). 36k on them now and that is about the best I've ever gone with OEM 4x4 tires. 50k looks quite possible at this rate. The front tires do look a little plump at the bottom at 35psi but it works.

The stock Firestone Wilderness tires are only a "P" rated tire (passanger car).  They don't have the strength to withstand higher pressures.  GM puts these soft tires on your truck, so that it rides like a car...  (doesn't help if you want to haul much of a load though! )  I'd stick wwith the recommended psi on the door jamb.  If you want to put some "LT" rated truck tires on you can run higher pressures.  I think the stock wheels are rated up to 60 psi.  (Help me out here Mountaineer Tom 'cause I know you know...)

Now that I think of it, I picked the truck up a couple of months ago when outside temps were near freezing and it has been up near 70 today when I looked at them so there might have only been 35psi in them when they delivered it.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a reason for the extra 5psi that i needed to know about.  With the reputation of Firestones on a "different" company's light trucks, I did not want to overinflate them for no reason  ;)

What year truck do you have? my 99 has 245 75 16 Goodyear Wranglers but it is not a Z71. The tire says 'standard load' max press. 44psi. I didn't know that any og our trucks got Firestones.

It's a 2002 Z71.  I bought the truck before I saw it or I would have said something to the dealer.  Since the dealer is a little over an hour away and they wanted the sale, they offered to drive it down to where I live.  I did not mind since I was not looking forward to spending a half-day pick it up.  I would have thought Goodyear or Michelin, but hey, this way I get to pick the new tires I get.  Maybe later, maybe sooner.....who knows

I'm not sure on the rating on the wheels themselves.  Actually, I don't recall seeing/hearing any info on the psi rating on the wheels.  ???

I try to keep my stock Firestone tires around 34 psi most of the time and I feel like I've gotten good wear out of them.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I guess they look fine at 35.  We'll see how long I can stand keeping the 'stones' on the rims.  I just hate to throw away a tire that still has tread left on it.  I wish dealers put better tires on our trucks.      :D

I went to the Firestone dealer with my '00 Silverado and he gave me credit on the stock tires towards the purchase of Bridgestone Dualer LT's.  I replaced all 5 tires for about $130 mounted and balanced.  The stock tires had about 1000 miles on them, and I used the 100% satisfaction guarantee as my leverage.  I told them I wasn't happy having a "p" rated tire on my truck and I didn't think it was heavy enough to do what I wanted.  They honored my request, but only for Bridgestone tires (which I thought the Dualer was a darn nice tire).
