Won’t go in reverse…..

 

Long story so here it goes….. I have a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 (5.3l / Auto transmission / electronic 4x4 – Auto, 2wd, 4L, 4H) with 120k miles.

I’m driving my truck (2wd mode) and I pull up to my house, get out and go inside with the truck still running. I get back in my truck and put in reverse and it’s like my truck is in neutral. I put it back in park, then back to reverse, I hear a grinding noise, but again it acts like it’s still in neutral. I speak with a couple mechanics thinking I have a transmission problem. Sure enough unanimous everyone is pointing to the transmission.

 

I take it to a reputable tranny guy and he says most likely the shell is broke. He drops the tranny pulls it apart…. Says there’s minimal wear, no broke shell, but rebuilds it anyway since he has it apart. After the tranny is rebuilt he too cannot get the truck in reverse (2wd mode), so basically at this point I’m $1100 in the hole and still have the problem. He plays around and put the truck in “Auto mode” and suddenly the reverse starts working… all is good. He recommends the issue being a broke tooth in the transfer case…. Says its terminal but all fluids were full in the TC, etc…..

 

While in Auto mode I have the need to drive through a ditch… thinking I will get stuck… I feel the 4wd lock in and I drive right through it. Fast forward since… I’ve drove on the beach 2 times in Auto mode (loose sand not Daytona) and both times the 4wd locked in and drove without issues.

 

I’ve been driving in auto mode for about 2 months. I take it to a mechanic today and he replaces the 4wd electronic switch with no luck. He tries to read the code but for some reason there’s no power to my code cord?? He’s now leaning to a computer issue or the actuator motors….. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

When it was acting up, would it go fowards but just not reverse? Just for the heck of it, lift the whole truck off the ground and when in 4WD/ auto, see if the rear wheels are being powered. If not, then you definitely have an issue with the T-case.

I have seen these problems before. Your transfer case is to blame. Possibly a bad encoder motor or encoder ring. It is not a good idea to drive around in 4 Auto all the time. Your truck was not designed to do that. You should only use 4 Auto when you are on a road with patches of snow, towing uphill on gravel, or perhaps certain off-road conditions. Driving around all the time in 4 Auto locks in the front end, and causes significant wear and tear, as well as lower fuel mileage. If you MUST use 4 Auto, only activate it when you need to back up, but turn it off when driving forward. 

 

Also, make sure you have the proper fluid. The automatic T-Case requires a very specific fluid.

Yes. It would shift fine in forward gears.

+1 on swathdivers recommendation. Too bad the tranny guy won't take care of the transfer case if that turns out to be the issue. Maybe you pay for parts and he takes care of the labor since he thought it was the tranny. We have suggestions for saving you money on parts like Ebay with better pricing, free shipping and no tax. I feel for you dropping $1100 and not a fix.

What is a tech2? I took it to a local mechanic Thursday. He ruled out the instrument switch. He tried to read the code (maybe he did say tech2) but there was no power to the plugin? So he didn’t have a lot of time to work on it and told me to come back Monday. He was leaning towards an encoder motor or a computer. He says he’s first got to figure out why there’s no power at the plug reader?

Yeah the tranny guy said he doesn’t work on TC. Says you have to have special tools and they aren’t simple like the old days... go figure.

The Tech2 was the computer that the dealerships use to work on these trucks.  Besides reading codes, it can test, read just about everything and be use to program modules and a whole lot of other stuff.  It's more important than a wrench.  For without it, you're throwing parts and money at a problem.  I don't buy that the OBD connector is not working.  Now if the scan tool cannot communicate with the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) and the wiring is good, then it is probably bad.  Could be that his scan tool is not good enough to talk to it too.  That's why we should have the same tools that the dealer uses.

 

Prices have come way down, $300-400 delivered depending on options.  Get software 33.004.  Then get subscription to shop manual from AllDataDIY or buy in pdf form from SeriousCTBuyer on ebay.  They go hand in hand.  Tech2 will pay for itself in no time.  This problem has already cost you $1100.

Saw a thread on another forum that sounded like the same problem as what I’m having and he said it was the module on the transfer case... wondering if he meant the Transfer Case Control Module.... not necessarily mounted on the TC.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
