96 Vortec 454 temp sensor??

My brother was changing the header gaskets on his 96 3500 with the 7.4L While he was doing that he broke the sensor on the right head. I know it is a temp sensor, but it has one on each head as well as one on the manifold like a 5.7L. the temp gauge is still working, so I wondered if this one might be for the auxillary fan? Does anybody know what the function of this sensor is?

There are 3: The SENSOR on the intake manifold near the thermostat housing is for the computer. The SENDER in the left (driver's side) head is for the temp. gauge. The SWITCH in the right (passenger side) head is for the aux. fan.
