Shift knob

My friend has a 2000 silverado and would like to replace the shift knob. He wanted me to ask how hard it is to remove the stock knob.....in other words does he have to hacksaw it.....any info is always appreciated.

Usually, manual shift knobs are just screwed on (at least the ones I've always seen), with a glue to keep them from unscrewing. I doubt you'd need to hacksaw it off! Trying unscrewing it first. If that doesn't work I guess you could always just get a new shifter with any knob you want, but that's $$. Chris

There shouldn't be any problem screwing it off, just work with it before you do something stupid like hack saw it! :D:rolleyes:

 ....sorry but I thought the manual or standard question was funny....for some reason I could just see some dood, running around town with an eight ball on his automatic shifter.....the picture in my head is making me laugh :D

some models come STANDARD w/ an automatic! if it's a manuel transmision, then it is either screwed on or there is a small bolt towards the bottom holding it on. if it's an automatic, then you need to replace the whole lever(no knob on there); I never done it before but it should be pretty easy to figure out if you remove the plastic cover on the steering column

Okay everybody was wrong. VERY WRONG. The hacksaw was needed....it doesnt screw on or bolt on or even glued on!!!....Its part of the shift lever.....The shift lever is hollow...once finaly got the shift knob removed...WHICH WASNT FUN....had to be cut off...yes hacksaw was involed with a utility knife and a heat gun....screw off my ass......had to tap the hollow lever and had to place a nipple in it.....if you dont know what a nipple is i dont care.....attach the new shift knob to the nipple.....BEWARE OF SHIFT KNOBS IN 2000 SILVERADO'S they like to stay on!!!
