Considering a non running2009 LMM 2500HD, input needed

Found a good deal on a high mileage LMM 

 

I could likely  get it for about 5k off of the guy. 

 

it’s a 2500HD LTZ crew cab long bed 4wd

 

leather looks pretty good. 

 

I’ve owned gm trucks and suvs most of my life but this would be my first GM diesel. 

 

(Owned one 6.0 ford and that was a mess)

 

ive read about eh broken crank issues, cp4s on later models, injectors on earlier models, and def on LMM and LML

 

just don’t want another diesel headache but if I could put in a long block for 5-8k I’d consider it. 

 

Not a kid wanting a toy, it would be used for farm work and family trips. 

 

No loads above 12k, most below 5k. I do know a long bed is very desireable as I liked and used that feature a lot in my old ford. 

 

any and all constructive Input from Duramax owners is appreciated

You will prob get the most responses on a dedicated diesel site like duramaxforum or duramaxdiesels.

My 2 cents? Look truck over well, has it been beat on and used hard? Or very clean outside and underneath?

You’re sure it needs a motor? Have service history pulled at dealer to see any potential problems previous owner had.

Sounds like a lot of work and could be a can of worms money pit. Of course could be a good deal if you factor in what it would cost to fix and buy. It better be thousands less than a similar running well maintained used truck.

Diesel to gas conversion may not work with the diesel computers.

Truck has almost 300k miles so figured it may be approaching the service life of the engine anyway. 

 

The body and interior look great, and admittedly it’s hard to find clean black CCLB 4x4s around Texas.

Ok, So 300k on these trucks are nothing. I am well over that on all my LMM's and I use them to farm with as well. Without seeing the vehicle it will be hard to say what exactly is wrong with it. But LMM's are tanks. If I had to guess what this issue was (and the truck would spin over just not start) I would say it is a fuel supply issue. I don't know what kind of tools you have access too, but on the top of the engine there is a vac/pressure service port where you can hook up your tester. Prime the fuel system at the filter and see if it will prime to 10psi and shouldn't drop over 2psi a minute.

 

Crank the vehicle and watch the gauge and see if it goes to more then 3hg of vac. 
 

With those 2 tests I can kinda lead you in a direction. I love a duramax. Very easy system to diagnose and repair. And at 300k miles... that motor is just getting warmed up good.

It is a little expensive, but if you're going to have a diesel and do any of your own repairs... it is a must!

Thanks for the info, I will definitely pick one of those up if I end up getting it.

 

I ran the vin with the dealership in town and found out it had a long bock swapped under warranty at 78k miles in Mid 2012, only other work were a few minor suspension seals and a trans service at 67k

 

Feel free to share your thoughts. definitely leaning towards buying it if I can get it at a decent price.
