so im replacing the ignition lock cylinder mostly cause a brand new one came with the truck so its free and it has 2 keys so I don't need to spend 3 dollars to copy th current ignition key. do I really have to remove the steering wheel or can I leave it on and just remove the steering column covers?

You will have to pull the steering wheel. Fortunately, your local auto parts store will probably have a puller in their loaner tools inventory.

It's straightforward, but you need to be careful as the airbag is right there and you can accidentally set it off... GM has a procedure to disable the airbag system, which varies with the truck you have, but you should be able to find some good youtube videos on how to do the whole process.
