2013 Silverado Shifts into D, acts like N, then bucks into Drive?

Trying to help out my father-in-law on a transmission issue.  He has a 2013 Silverado with 5.3L, 2WD, and 175K miles.  The truck has been maintained regularly with transmission fluid changes every 50K miles.

 

His issue is that he shifts into D, steps on the gas but the truck just revs as if he were in Neutral.  After a few seconds it will feel like it finally shifts into gear.  During this moment it will buck and he is on his way.

 

Just curious if anyone has ran into this or if it is a common issue with hopefully a simple fix.

First, check your transmission fluid level.  However, this is pretty classic "rebuild my transmission" symptom.  It could also be something simple like a control valve, but when those fail in something modern like a '13 you usually get a check-engine code thrown.  I'd take it to a repair shop that specializes in transmissions and have them take a look.
