26 Gal. Fuel Tank

Yesterday I drove my truck about 20 miles after the "low fuel" light came on. Being that this was as far as I had driven after it came on I was surprised when I put 27.23 gallons in! I thought these were only 26 gallon tanks.

id imagine that there is some extra room in there for vapors and expansion of fuel if needed in cold weather. thats why i never "top off." its also possible the station you got gas at may need its pumps recalibrated, they can be off a little.

You don't happen to have a long bed do you? They have 34 gallon tanks. I'd rather think that your low fuel light came on with 8 gallons left in a 34 gallon tank than that it came on with a quart left in a 26 gallon tank.

I wasnt paying attention to my gauge on a trip once. The light came on and I drove anothe 33 miles. I put in 28.2 gallons. The sum beech was on vapors. Running them that low, isnt good for the fuel pump.

I would be careful running your tanks so low.I have put 26+ gallons in my tank more times than I can count.That was until I found myself sitting on the shoulder 15 miles after the low fuel light came on.That light in the dash should read get gas right now.When I get to less than a 1/4 tank I tank up.

My "low fuel" light has only come on once or twice since I bought my truck new 1.5 years ago. I put 25 gallons in once and the light wasn't on yet! I usually fill up at 1/4 tank just to be safe. Sure wish I had the 34 gallon tank!

I haven't looked. Is the fuel pumps on the NBS' in the tank? If they are, the safe habit is to refill at 1/4 tank. The fuel is used as a pump coolant.

I've filled the tank numerous time immediately (less than five miles, or almost 1/2 gallon) after low fuel light illuminates. Always takes almost 6 gallons. I have 8.1/Alli long bed with 34 gallon tank. Evidently comes on after consuming 28 gallons, which is size of smaller tank, I believe. Coincidence? Sensor set to -28 gallons on all HDs, then you would run out right away with smaller tank. I have often wondered if their was a correlation.

ps: took my teenage daughter to the street legal drags today at Woodburn Dragstrip, an NHRA track, and she is hooked. Am also the person leaving for Saudi Arabia in a week or two and leaving my truck with her. I am sure there will be a correlation there, 'cause she knows it only takes $20 and a helmet to race.

If I fill up within a few miles of the warning lite coming on (almost always between 300 and 325 miles on the Trip ODO), I usually end up putting in between 23.5 and 24.5 gallons. One time when I had no choice, I had to drive a little further to get gas. I was praying I could make it to a station. ended up putting in 26.2.
